Lower Diptera The paraphyly of this assemblage (=”Nematocera”) was suspected for three decades (Hennig 1968, 1973, 1981, Wood and Borkent 1989) and demonstrated in recent cladistic analyses (Sinclair 1992, Oosterbroek and Courtney 1995, Blagoderov et al. 2007).

Australian Blepariceridae (Diptera)
Australian Journal of Zoology Supplementary Series, 1977A general description of the morphology of Australian Blephariceridae and – where needed for comparison – of other members of the family is given. The data provide the basis for a reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships (sensu Hennig). Only two subfamilies (Edwardsininae and Blepharicerinae, s.1.) are recognized; the former subfamilies ...

The flies and midges within the order Diptera (true flies) bears membranous forewings, whilst their hindwings are vestigial, modified into balancing organs called halteres. These insects develop via holometabolous metamorphosis including all the following developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa and imago.
