Anti-cyanobacterial activity of Moringa oleifera seeds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Filtrates from crushed Moringa oleifera seeds were tested for their effects on growth and Photosystem II efficiency of the common bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. M.

Structure and function of the bacterial and fungal gut microbiota of Neotropical butterflies

open access: yesEcological Monographs, Volume 89, Issue 2, May 2019., 2019
Abstract The relationship between animals and their gut flora is simultaneously one of the most common and most complex symbioses on Earth. Despite its ubiquity, our understanding of this invisible but often critical relationship is still in its infancy. We employed adult Neotropical butterflies as a study system to ask three questions: First, how does

Insights into the forests of Darién, Panama, from the new 10 ha Bacurú Drõa plot established through participatory methods within an Emberá territory

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 7, Issue 10, October 2025.
We present the first data from a new forest plot co‐developed with the Traditional Emberá Authorities of the Balsa River Collective Lands, Darién, Panama: The Bacurú Drõa plot. We compare floristic characteristics and conservation status of trees in BD with those of 53 forest plots across Panama.

Wind Shapes the Growth Strategies of Trees in a Tropical Forest

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 27, Issue 9, September 2024.
We estimated wind mortality risk by measuring 95 trees bending in the wind in a tropical forest in Panama. Surprisingly, local wind exposure had minimal impact on relative wind mortality risk; instead, species wood density emerged as the crucial factor. This highlights the pivotal role of wind safety in shaping tropical forest structure.

Nest‐site selection and reproductive success of a critically endangered parrot, the Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus), in an anthropogenic landscape

open access: yesIbis, Volume 166, Issue 2, Page 518-533, April 2024.
Nest‐site selection is the principal way in which secondary cavity‐nesting species mitigate the negative effects of factors such as predation, parasitism and exposure on reproductive success. Large‐bodied secondary cavity‐nesting birds rely on large cavities in mature trees that are often absent or reduced in anthropogenically disturbed forests. Hence,
