Paraplegic Dogs: Urinary Bladder Evacuation with Direct Electric Stimulation

Science, 1963
Stimulation of the detrusor muscle by means of two implanted wire electrodes increased intravesical pressure markedly in ten trials in normal dogs and in nine trials following transection of the dog's lumbar spinal cord. The urinary bladder could be completely emptied up to 2 or 3 weeks postoperatively.

Intraoperative electrocorticography and direct cortical electrical stimulation

Seminars in Anesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain, 1997
Summary First performed by Victor Horsley in 1886, the surgical management of epilepsy has increased substantially over the past 20 years. The goals of surgery are to render a patient seizure-free without additional neurological deficits. ECoG provides information on the location of abnormal spiking cortex in lesional and nonlesional epilepsy surgery ...

Control of Pain by Direct Electrical Stimulation of Peripheral Nerves

Neurosurgery, 1976
Our results after implanting electrodes around peripheral nerves in 69 patients over a 10 year period are only fair with but 17 individuals maintaining relief until death or until the present time. Thirteen others had weeks or months of temporary relief.

[Direct current electrical stimulation in the treatment of aphasia].

Revista de neurologia, 2018
Ictus is a medical condition with a high prevalence in Spanish population. One of its most common consequences is aphasia. Nowadays, aphasia is treated with both neuropsychological and pharmacological therapy. However, in recent years, transcranial direct current stimulation has been presented as a complement to classical therapies. To familiarize the ...

Direct electrical stimulation of the optic radiation in patients with covered eyes

Neurosurgical Review, 2014
Direct electrical stimulation (DES) of the optic radiation (OR) during an awake tumor resection has been repeatedly reported. In all cases, visual function monitoring was performed in patients with open eyes which were looking at a picture. We report a new modification of the standard method, OR stimulation in patient with closed and covered eyes.

Direct and indirect effects of electrical stimulation on the motility of human sperm

International Journal of Urology, 1999
Background: Electroejaculation is a technique that is becoming more frequently available for obtaining sperm from men with spinal cord injury or psychogenic anejaculation. However, the effect of electrical stimulation on the movement of human sperm has not been clarified. Methods: Electrical stimulation was applied to ejaculated semen or washed sperm ...

[Language mapping with direct electrical stimulation].

Brain and nerve = Shinkei kenkyu no shinpo, 2012
Language mapping with electrical stimulation in patients with lesions close to the language area aids surgery by identifying the language area in each individual. This method is quite important in a clinical setting, and is the most reliable for preventing persistent language deficits after resection.

Direct Current Electrical Bone Growth Stimulation for Spinal Fusion

Spine, 1988
An electronic bone growth stimulator (EBGS) had been devised to facilitate lumbosacral fusion in the early 1970s, using a totally implanted device which delivers a steady 5 microA at each of four cathodes. The use of the device is reserved for patients in whom painful and abnormal motion is demonstrated to be the major cause of low-back pain.

Studying cognitive functions by means of direct electrical stimulation: a review

Neurological Sciences, 2017
In recent years, neurosurgical patients have highly contributed to research in behavioural neurology. This development is in part due to the use of direct electrical stimulation during brain surgery. Indeed, during surgery for a tumour, involving both grey and white matter, it has become a common clinical practice to awaken patients with the aim of ...
