A Model for the Visual Perception of Direction
Optometry and Vision Science, 1988ABSTRACT An attempt is made to explain how the eyes can be moved with respect to the head and the observer can still assess the direction of an object in space fixed with respect to the head. My explanation is based on the assumption that the subject is made aware of the direction in which the eyes are pointing by the output from the ...

Reid's direct approach to perception
Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A, 1986Abstract Reid's criticism of the theory of ideas is regarded as his most important philosophical contribution, while his sensation — perception distinction is considered to be his most important psychological contribution. This is surprising since the sensation — perception distinction is one of the basic tenets of the traditional theory of ideas. In

How to Interpret ‘Direct Perception’
1992Abstract Do our perceptual experiences enable us to directly perceive external objects? What is it to perceive something “directly”? Some philosophers have failed to avoid running together an epistemological with a non-epistemological way of understanding the phrase ‘direct perception’ (or ‘directly perceives’).

Informative Tactile Stimuli in the Perception of Direction
Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1966Three experiments evaluated the efficiency of a special tactile symbol, whose stimuli purportedly specify direction, for use in tactile diagrams for the blind. A tactile form of the conventional visual arrow symbol served as a control symbol. The directional aspects of the stimuli were easily discriminated by both blind and sighted

Abstract In this chapter I further develop interaction theory and the concept of primary intersubjectivity by providing evidence for our ability to directly perceive intentions and emotions. Intentions and emotions can be understood at least in part as composed of perceivable patterns of contextualized embodied behaviors.

In a previous study, we found that the accuracy of human haptic perception of force direction is not very high. We also found an effect of physical force direction on the error subjects made, resulting in ‘error patterns’. In the current study, we assessed the between- and within-subject variation of these patterns.

This paper defends a perceptual account of empathy in opposition to purely cognitive theories on how we grasp the emotion of another. Empathy has to start with the perception of another human being before us. However, the often favored simulation argument (in which we imagine "what it's like" to be "in their shoes") seems to propose that perception ...

In Defense of Direct Perception
1998My goal in this paper is to defend the claim that one can directly perceive an object without possessing any descriptive beliefs about this object. My strategy in defending this claim is to rebut three arguments that attack my view of direct perception.
