Simple Complexity Analysis of Simplified Direct Search [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We consider the problem of unconstrained minimization of a smooth function in the derivative-free setting using. In particular, we propose and study a simplified variant of the direct search method (of direction type), which we call simplified direct ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Direct search methods using orthogonal directions: the Rosenbrock method and the David, Swann, and Campey method

open access: yes, 1988
The Rosenbrock Algorithm and the D. S. C. Algorithm, both direct search methods using orthogonal directions were implemented into a software. Values of the optimal parameters were determined and the performance was compared with each other and with the ...

Comparative Evaluation of Machine Learning and Hyperparameter Optimization Methods for Low-Cost CO2 Sensor Calibration in Terms of Performance and Computational Cost

open access: yesSensors
Low-cost sensors (LCSs) are increasingly used in air quality monitoring because of their affordability and scalability; however, their limited accuracy necessitates reliable calibration approaches. Although machine learning (ML)-based calibration methods

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Improved New Two-Spectral Conjugate Gradient Iterative Technique for Large Scale Optimization

open access: yesMağallaẗ Al-kūfaẗ Al-handasiyyaẗ
Numerous strategies have been proposed in the field of unconstrained optimization to address various optimization challenges, particularly those associated with large-scale systems. Among the classical methods, Newton and Quasi-Newton approaches are well-

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Quantum Enhancements for Direct Search Methods

open access: yes
This dissertation explores the use of quantum search algorithms to im- prove direct search methods for single and multiobjective optimization. Quantum search algorithms are known to reduce the expected number of oracle calls needed to find the solution ...

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.
