A Direct Search Method to Locate Negative Cycles in a Graph
Management Science, 1971A direct search method for locating and tracing negative cycles in a graph is developed based on a property of real, finite sequences. The efficiency of the method and its application for computing minimum cost flows is tested by applying it to solve a series of assignment problems.

An Efficient Conjugate Directions Method Without Linear Searches
2005New conjugate directions algorithms are proposed, which are based on an orthogonalization procedure and do not perform line searches. The orthogonalization procedure prevents the conjugate vectors set from the degeneracy, eliminates high sensitivity to computation errors pertinent to methods of conjugate directions, and thus enable us to solve large ...

Some Applications of Direct Search Methods
1999In recent years, direct search methods DSM) have been used to investigate the stability and accuracy of various numerical algorithms. This approach often provides an additional information about algorithm performance, which may be difficult to discover using theoretical analysis or direct numerical tests.

A Survey on Direct Search Methods for Blackbox Optimization and Their Applications
2014Blackbox optimization typically arises when the functions defining the objective and constraints of an optimization problem are computed through a computer simulation. The blackbox is expensive to compute, can have limited precision and can be contaminated with numerical noise.
