Directional asymmetry and direction-giving factors: Lessons from flowers with complex symmetry. [PDF]
AbstractDirectional asymmetry is a systematic difference between the left and right sides for structures with bilateral symmetry or a systematic differentiation among repeated parts for complex symmetry. This study explores factors that produce directional asymmetry in the flower ofIris pumila, a structure with complex symmetry that makes it possible ...

Fracture Diodes: Directional Asymmetry of Fracture Toughness [PDF]
Toughness describes the ability of a material to resist fracture or crack propagation. It is demonstrated here that fracture toughness of a material can be asymmetric, i.e., the resistance of a medium to a crack propagating from right to left can be significantly different from that to a crack propagating from left to right.

Visual search asymmetry for viewing direction [PDF]
In visual search experiments, we examined the existence of a search asymmetry for the direction with which three-dimensional objects are viewed. It was found that an upward-tilted target object among downward-tilted distracting objects was detected faster than when the orientation of target and distractors was reversed.

Phonetically Grounded Structural Bias in Learning Tonal Alternations
This study investigates the hypothesis that tone alternation directionality becomes a basis of structural bias for tone alternation learning, where “structural bias” refers to a tendency to prefer uni-directional tone deletions to bi-directional ones ...

Dark atoms: asymmetry and direct detection [PDF]
We present a simple UV completion of Atomic Dark Matter (aDM) in which heavy right-handed neutrinos decay to induce both dark and lepton number densities. This model addresses several outstanding cosmological problems: the matter/anti-matter asymmetry, the dark matter abundance, the number of light degrees of freedom in the early universe, and the ...

Remote sensing of ice crystal asymmetry parameter using multi-directional polarization measurements – Part 1: Methodology and evaluation with simulated measurements [PDF]
We present a new remote sensing technique to infer the average asymmetry parameter of ice crystals near cloud top from multi-directional polarization measurements.

Fluctuating Asymmetry and Stress in Macaca fuscata: Does Captivity Affect Morphology?
Fluctuating Asymmetry (FA) in morphology is used as a proxy for developmental instability in response to stress factors. FA has important implications for understanding the impact of differential environments and stressors on the skeletal phenotype. Here,

Testes asymmetry, condition and sexual selection in birds: an experimental test [PDF]
The functional significance of the marked directional asymmetry in testes size observed in many bird species is obscure. Møller suggested that (i) the smaller of the two testes serves a compensatory role and increases in size (and hence reduces ...

Testes asymmetry of Bufo gargarizans in relation to body condition and age
Testes asymmetry theory predicts that males in good condition or mature age may be able to develop larger degrees of directional asymmetry than males in poor condition or younger age.

Asymmetry of Caddo Ceramics from the Washington Square Mound Site: An Exploratory Analysis [PDF]
While pursuing a study of 3D geometric morphometrics for ceramic burial vessels that often articulate with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) from the ancestral Caddo region, there have been no shortage of potentially ...
