Teaching Directional Couplers and Directional Bridges
2021 XXXIVth General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI GASS), 2021Directional couplers and bridges are used as components of measurement chains to monitor forward and reflected power in conducted and radiated measurements or as building blocks of measuring instruments like scalar and vector network analyzers. In my experience as a master's degree and PhD student these devices were presented, at most, for the purpose ...

Directional Electromagnetic Couplers
Proceedings of the IRE, 1954The natural coupling between parallel transmission lines is inherently directional. Very simple and cheap directional couplers can be made which utilize this effect. By introducing appropriate variation of coupling with distance a wide variety of transmission characteristics may be realized, including high-pass (ideally, infinite bandwidth ...

BISTABLE TRANSMITTING NONLINEAR DIRECTIONAL COUPLERS
Modern Physics Letters B, 2006Nonlinearity induced by intensity-dependent refractive indices (Kerr media) can be used as a means to conceive light detectors sensitive to very weak excitation. This property results from the bistability properties of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation submitted to boundary value data on the finite interval.

High Directivity Directional Coupler using Metamaterial
2006 European Microwave Conference, 2006In this paper, a novel uniplanar directional coupler using left-handed transmission lines is proposed. Short microstrip parallel coupled lines and asymmetrical delay line pairs make multi-sectioned coupler enhance the directivity as well as the coupling.

In a line the incident and the reflected voltage can be rebuilt in an analog manner by detecting the current I and the voltage V, and realizing tbe linear combinations V+= (V + ZI)/2 and V-= (V-ZI)/2 with the help of suitable networks, either passive or active. Active directional couplers, obtained with one triode according to this method, are proposed.

The optical directional coupler, analogous to the microwave element1 of the same name, consists of parallel channel optical waveguides sufficiently closely spaced that energy is transferred from one to another. For this coupling to take place cumulatively over a substantial length, the light must propagate with the same phase velocity in each channel ...
