Adjustable Directional Couplers

Instruments and Experimental Techniques, 2003
The characteristics of directional couplers with coupling factors of 3.0 and 12.6 dB at 1.3 GHz are calculated. The devices are based on 165.1 × 82.5 mm2 rectangular waveguides coupled through their common narrow walls. In both devices, the coupling factor can be varied within ±1 dB relative to its nominal value (at a directivity of no less than 25 dB).

The Transvar Directional Coupler

Proceedings of the IRE, 1953
A new directional coupler capable of transferring variable amounts of power (0 to 100 per cent) from one waveguide to another is described and analyzed. The coupling element in this coupler is a long slot containing a grid of wires in the common narrow wall of the two waveguides. The coupler can carry nearly the full power of the waveguide and has been

Teaching Directional Couplers and Directional Bridges

2021 XXXIVth General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI GASS), 2021
Directional couplers and bridges are used as components of measurement chains to monitor forward and reflected power in conducted and radiated measurements or as building blocks of measuring instruments like scalar and vector network analyzers. In my experience as a master's degree and PhD student these devices were presented, at most, for the purpose ...

Directional Electromagnetic Couplers

Proceedings of the IRE, 1954
The natural coupling between parallel transmission lines is inherently directional. Very simple and cheap directional couplers can be made which utilize this effect. By introducing appropriate variation of coupling with distance a wide variety of transmission characteristics may be realized, including high-pass (ideally, infinite bandwidth ...

The directional coupler antenna

IRE International Convention Record, 2005
The combination of four broadband 3 db directional couplers and four radiating elements into an antenna for direction-finding purposes has been investigated. Under theoretical conditions, two overlapping beams with constant crossover level and variable crossover slope over an infinite frequency band can be obtained.

Method for Measuring the Directivity of Directional Couplers

IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 1958
This method of measuring directivity requires the measurement of the ratio of powers delivered to the side arm when the normal input arm is connected alternately to an adjustable sliding termination and a sliding short circuit. The short circuit is phased to yield maximum and minimum responses and the amplitudes are averaged.

A Consideration of Directivity in Waveguide Directional Couplers

Proceedings of the IRE, 1949
A hypothesis is developed for the directivity characteristic of a type of waveguide directional coupler. Formulas and design curves are presented, and supporting experimental data are given.

Active directional couplers

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1967
In a line the incident and the reflected voltage can be rebuilt in an analog manner by detecting the current I and the voltage V, and realizing tbe linear combinations V+= (V + ZI)/2 and V-= (V-ZI)/2 with the help of suitable networks, either passive or active. Active directional couplers, obtained with one triode according to this method, are proposed.
