Mindfulness meditation increases interictal epileptiform discharges in meditation‐naïve surgical epilepsy patients

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Meditation has widely recognized psychological and neuromodulatory benefits, yet its effects on epileptiform activity remain unclear. This study examined whether novice meditation modulates interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) in patients with drug‐resistant epilepsy using intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG).

Gamma suppression correlates with thalamic stimulation therapeutic response in intractable epilepsy

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective In patients with drug‐resistant epilepsy who undergo anterior nucleus of the thalamus (ANT) deep brain stimulation (DBS), efficacy is assessed months after therapy initiation and clinicians have no guidance when choosing stimulation parameters due to the lack of real‐time biomarkers.

Complement C3 mediates adolescent social isolation‐induced hippocampal synaptic deficits and sex‐specific emotional dysfunction

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Medicine, EarlyView.
Adolescent social isolation disrupts hippocampal function and exacerbates emotional symptoms, with sex‐specific patterns, as shown by human studies. In mice, social isolation decreased hippocampal synaptic density and calcium signaling, upregulated complement proteins, and activated complement‐mediated microglial synaptic phagocytosis.

Sweetspot Mapping in Deep Brain Stimulation: Strengths and Limitations of Current Approaches

open access: yesNeuromodulation: Technology at the Neural Interface, EarlyView., 2021
Abstract Objectives Open questions remain regarding the optimal target, or sweetspot, for deep brain stimulation (DBS) in, for example, Parkinson's disease. Previous studies introduced different methods of mapping DBS effects to determine sweetspots. While having a direct impact on surgical targeting and postoperative programming in DBS, these methods ...
