Coordination of directional overcurrent relays using a novel method to select their settings

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission & Distribution, 2011
This study presents a new method to select the settings of directional overcurrent relays. First, a new selection criterion of pickup currents is adopted. It results in discrete pickup current values, which mitigate the selectivity constraints effect on the minimisation of time multiplier settings.

Busbar Fault Direction Identification Using Sequences of Displacement Vectors

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 2, February 2026.
In this paper, a novel busbar fault direction identification scheme is presented. The proposed scheme is based on sequences of displacement vectors. The proposed algorithm is fast and simple enough to be embedded in a differential relay to assist the percentage‐restraint differential algorithm.

Optimal Protection Coordination of Active Distribution Networks Using Smart Selection of Short Circuit Voltage-Based Relay Characteristics

open access: yesEnergies, 2023
Much attention has been paid to the optimized protection of microgrids (MGs) and active distribution networks (ADNs). However, the literature shows a research gap in proposing a hybrid scheme, utilizing the voltage-based and overcurrent-based relays ...

Advanced Clustering and Optimisation Techniques for Adaptive Protection in AC Microgrids With Hardware‐in‐the‐Loop Testing

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, Volume 14, Issue 1, Page 377-398, January 2026.
Standard and proposed non‐standard OCR characteristics. ABSTRACT This study introduces an advanced adaptive protection approach for AC power systems, designed to address key limitations in current clustering‐based relay coordination methods. Using K‐means, hierarchical, and spectral clustering techniques, the proposed scheme classifies grid operating ...

Coordination of Directional Overcurrent Relays using Growth Optimizer

open access: yesElectrotehnica, Electronica, Automatica
The protection system plays a crucial role in the generation, transmission, and distribution systems of a power network. Among various protection relay types, Directional Overcurrent Relays (DOCRs) are the most used. When abnormal conditions are detected, these relays trigger the tripping of protection devices by detecting the direction and magnitude ...

Adaptive Protection Coordination for Microgrids Using Dual‐Setting Directional Overcurrent Relays: A Real‐Time HIL Validation Approach

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This research presents a robust protection coordination strategy using dual‐setting directional overcurrent relays (DS‐DOCRs) and a novel optimisation approach to address challenges in adaptive protection. A modified objective function, incorporating primary and backup relay operating times along with coordination time intervals (CTIs), is designed to ...

Multi‐point‐line Grounding Fault Section Identification in Urban Distribution Networks by Using Coordinated Multi‐Source Data

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
A multi‐source data collaborative fault section identification method for high fault‐tolerant distribution networks is proposed. The method constructs a robust mixed‐integer linear programming cooperative model by integrating zero‐sequence current direction features and fault indicator alarm signals.

Short‐Circuit Current Analysis of Grid‐Connected Inverters: An Analytical Approach Using Hardware Natural Response and Control Superposition

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission &Distribution, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This paper proposes a closed‐form analytical framework predicting the sub‐cycle transient peak currents of grid‐following and grid‐forming inverters during short‐circuit faults. The method uniquely decouples the fault current into a hardware natural response and a control‐commanded response, enabling rapid estimation of instantaneous initial peaks ...
