Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

The cause of azimuthal variations in directional reflectance of vegetative canopies [PDF]

open access: yes, 1971
The variation of the directional reflectance of a vegetative canopy with azimuthal view angle becomes prominent when the canopy is illuminated by the sun at large angles from zenith.

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Diurnal Patterns of the Bi-Directional Reflectance of Fresh-Water Ice

open access: yes, 1990
To improve the interpretation of surface cryospheric albedo from satellite sensor data, diurnal measurements of the spectral bi-directional reflectance of a commonly-found fresh-water ice type were made, from which hemispherical reflectance can be ...

Structure–Function Decoupling of the Sensorimotor and Default Mode Networks in Black Americans With MS

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives Multiple sclerosis (MS) exhibits racially disparate rates of disease progression. Black people with MS (B‐PwMS) experience a more severe disease course than non‐Hispanic White people with MS (NHW‐PwMS). Here we investigated structural and functional connectivity as well as structure–function decoupling in the ...

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Satellite estimates of wide-range suspended sediment concentrations in Changjiang (Yangtze) estuary using MERIS data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The Changjiang (Yangtze) estuarine and coastal waters are characterized by suspended sediments over a wide range of concentrations from 20 to 2,500 mg l-1.

Brief communication: Not as dirty as they look, flawed airborne and satellite snow spectra [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere
Key to the success of spaceborne missions is understanding snowmelt in our warming climate, as this has implications for nearly 2 billion people. An obstacle is that surface reflectance products over snow show an erroneous hook with decreases in the ...

Prognostic Value of Neurofilament Light Chain and Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein in ALD‐Related Myelopathy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background X‐linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X‐ALD) is a neurometabolic disorder caused by pathogenic variants in ABCD1, leading to slowly progressive spinal cord disease in nearly all affected men. Sensitive biomarkers to quantify disease severity and predict progression are needed for clinical care and trial design.

A unified Hapke-HSR + MARMIT-2 soil radiative transfer model for reflectance simulation under varying moisture conditions [PDF]

open access: yesGeoscientific Model Development
Soil radiative transfer models (RTMs) provide a physical basis for interpreting surface reflectance and retrieving land-surface parameters. However, most existing soil RTMs represent either the spectral-directional scattering behavior of dry soils or the
