Summary: Interface dynamics are analyzed theoretically in the quasilocal regime of directional growth explored by experiments on liquid crystals. We discover ``vacillating-breathing'' (VB) modes. Upon variation of the growth speed the interface motion enters a chaotic regime via a quasiperiodicity scenario.
