Exarachellos: Dirhams in Tenth-Century Barcelona

Around the year 1000, in addition to local currency, dirhams from al-Andalus circulated in Barcelona, which were called caceminos in documents. This name imitated the Arabic designation darāhim qāsimiyya, reminiscent of Córdoba’s famous mint master, Qāsim ibn Ḫālid.

The Telavi Hoard of Clipped Umayyad Dirhams

This study examines a hoard of clipped Umayyad dirhams discovered in 2022 in the environs of Telavi, a city in eastern Georgia. The hoard comprised only Umayyad dirhams, reportedly numbering between 20 and 25, including: Dimashq – 2 (11.8%); Wāsiṭ – 11 (64.7%); Al-Kūfah – 1 (5.9%); Al-Baṣrah – 2 (11.8%); Fīl (a rare mint of unknown location) – 1 (5.9%).
