Macrocyclic lactone resistance in Dirofilaria immitis

Veterinary Parasitology, 2011
Microfilariae were isolated from a Katrina rescue dog that remained microfilariaemic despite successful adulticidal treatments and repeated treatment with high doses of macrocyclic lactones (MLs). The microfilariae were genotyped at two P-glycoprotein single nucleotide polymorphic sites which had been found to correlate with reduced sensitivity to MLs.

Macrocyclic Lactones and Dirofilaria immitis Microfilariae

Topics in Companion Animal Medicine, 2011
Although there has been extensive veterinary focus on both the effectiveness of macrocyclic lactones for heartworm prevention in dogs and their adulticidal effects, little attention has been directed to their effects on heartworm microfilariae. With routine use of macrocyclic lactones, in some cases knowingly, in dogs with existing heartworm infections,

Dirofilaria immitis Lung Nodules

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1981
To the Editor.— The BRIEF REPORT (1980;243:1066) on lung nodules caused by the dog heartworm Dirofilaria immitis emphasizes the disproportionately large, globular area of necrosis with a distribution inconsistent with simple embolic infarction. The authors suggest that centrifugal diffusion of worm antigen is instrumental in defining the extent of the

Intraarticular Dirofilaria immitis microfilariae in two dogs

Veterinary Parasitology, 2008
Dirofilaria immitis microfilariae were found in the synovial fluid of two dogs. One dog had clinical and cytological evidence of polyarthritis at the time of presentation. The second dog presented with severe effusion in a single joint and was later diagnosed with synovial sarcoma of the affected joint.

Delayed isotype switching in Dirofilaria immitis infection

Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1986
The anti-microfilarial immunoglobulin response in Dirofilaria immitis infection was investigated serially in a naturally infected dog. Spontaneous clearance of microfilariae was associated with IgM opsonizing antibodies which promoted in vitro killing of microfilariae by granulocytes.

Bilateral pulmonary nodules caused by Dirofilaria immitis

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1990
The unusual case of bilateral lung nodules caused by Dirofilaria immitis in a 44-year-old woman is presented. A brief discussion of the life cycle of this parasite, the clinical and epidemiological features of human infestation, and the roentgenographic and laboratory findings is given.

Biology of Dirofilaria Immitis

2018
The biology of Dirofilaria immitis must be studied on two levels to understand the requirements for the parasite's survival. The first approach is to study the biology of individual organisms, the second is to observe the dynamics of the total population. The somatic musculature of D.

The Chemotherapy of Dirofilaria Immitis

The American Journal of Tropical Medicine, 1936
Summary 1.  The dog, harboring Dirofilaria immitis, serves as an appropriate laboratory animal for testing the filaricidal effect of drugs proposed for use in the treatment of human filariasis. 2.  Fatal doses of fouadin given intramuscularly, within a short period of time caused a complete disappearance of the microfilariae from the peripheral blood ...
