Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
Abstract Ambiguous words are a problem in information retrieval and natural language analysis in general This paper investigates automatic resolution of ambiguities from natural language text. Two classes of experiments are presented. In the first, disambiguation is performed with the aid of a manually defined set of resolution rules.

Ambiguous notation is a powerful tool developed to deal with the complexity of mathematics without sacrificing clarity or conciseness. In the mechanized parsing of ambiguous terms, a disambiguation algorithm can be used to provide the system with the intelligence necessary to select valid interpretations for the overloaded symbols received in input.

Blog users enjoy tagging for better document organization, while ambiguity in tags leads to inaccuracy in tag-based applications, such as retrieval, visualization or trend discovery. The dynamic nature of tag meanings makes current word sense disambiguation(WSD) methods not applicable. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised method for disambiguating

Sentence disambiguation by asking
Computers and Translation, 1986Our parsing algorithm produces all possible parses from an ambiguous sentence. For the algorithm to be useful in practical applications, we need a mechanism to select one intended parse out of a batch of parses. In theory, it is desirable for the system to be able to disambiguate a sentence by semantics and pragmatics, and a large number of techniques ...

Improving disambiguation in FASIT
Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1992An improved disambiguation mechanism, based on a recursive transition network, was used to enhance the automatic indexing system FASIT. FASIT with both the recursive transition network and alone showed improvement over single-term indexing in retrieval experiment with a medical test collection.

A proposal for lexical disambiguation
Proceedings of the workshop on Speech and Natural Language - HLT '91, 1991A method of sense resolution is proposed that is based on WordNet, an on-line lexical database that incorporates semantic relations (synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, causal and troponymic entailment) as labeled pointers between word senses. With WordNet, it is easy to retrieve sets of semantically related words, a facility that will be used for ...

We consider strategies for reducing ambiguity in multi-modal data, particularly in the domain of images and text. Large data sets containing images with associated text (and vice versa) are readily available, and recent work has exploited such data to learn models for linking visual elements to semantics.

Flexible Disambiguation in DTS
2010Quantifier scope ambiguities may engender several logical readings of a NL sentence. For instance, sentence (1) yields six possible readings, depending on the scoping of its three quantifiers: (∀5∃), (∀∃5), (∃∀5), (∃5∀), (5∀∃), and (5∃∀).

Russell on "Disambiguating with the Grain"
Russell: the Journal of Bertrand Russell Studies, 2001<p>Fregeans face the difficulty finding a notation for distinguishing statements about the sense or meaning of an expression as opposed to its reference or denotation. Famously, in "On Denoting", Russell rejected methods that begin with an expression designating its denotation, and then alter it with a "the meaning of" operator to designate the ...

Tagging with Delayed Disambiguation
2006We discuss problems inherent in domain specific tagging (biomedical domain) and their relevance to tagging issues in general. We present a novel approach to this problem which we call tagging with delayed disambiguation (TDD). This approach uses a modified, statistically-driven lexicon together with a small set of morphological, heuristic, and chunking
