Factors Influencing Disc Cutter Wear
Geomechanics and Tunnelling, 2008AbstractDisc cutter wear in mechanised tunnelling has a strong influence on costs and performance in hard rock and soil materials. Wear is affected by several geological and technical factors. Several aspects have been considered in prediction models and case studies.

Characteristics Analysis of TBM Disc Cutter Ring
Advanced Materials Research, 2010Disc cutter is the key part in Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Wear and tear of disc cutter is the main reason of low efficiency and high cost of this machine. Forces and deformations of disc cutter ring are foundation for its design and assembly. In this paper, the analysis of stress and deformation are carried to study their distribution; Wear mechanism

Layout design for disc cutters based on analysis of TBM cutter-head structure
Journal of Central South University, 2018Studies to date have failed to consider gage disc cutters’ variable cutting depth and the constraints of cutter-head welds, and have ignored the coupling mechanism between the profile of the full-face rock tunnel-boring machine (TBM) cutter-head and the assembled radius layout of the disc cutters.

Analyses of TBM disc cutter forces – application possibilities
Geomechanics and Tunnelling, 2019AbstractForecasts made during tunnelling of the daily advance, to control the machine, specify the lining and verify system behaviour are of great importance for safety and for the success of the whole project. In practice, such forecasts are obtained in deep tunnels by probe drilling, leading to downtime periods and by analog/digital face ...

Impact of Cleaning Efficiency on Disc Cutter Drilling Performance
Volume 9: Offshore Geotechnics; Petroleum Technology, 2023Abstract Large diameter drilling operations, including tunnel boring and raise boring, are capital-intensive projects. As such, proper estimation of time and cost is critical to the planning of the drilling project. To arrive at the correct estimation of the drilling time during the drilling phase, accurate prediction of the drilling ...

Rock Failure and Crack Propagation Beneath Disc Cutters
Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, 2014Analyses of rock failure mechanisms beneath disc cutters are presented. Full-scale cutting tests are conducted to assess the global energy input in comparison with rock chips and excavated volume. Small-scale cutting tests are subsequently used for macro- and microscopic analyses of rupture modes and crack propagation.

A recent application—the driven disc cutter
Journal of Terramechanics, 1984INTRODUCTION THE accompanying paper by A. R. Reece describes a new type of submarine cable plough in which a wedge sectioned slice o f soil is cut out by one or more disc cutters, and this is shown in Fig. 6 o f t h a t paper. The disc shown in that figure is a simple trial device, the final design being much more complicated, including a spring ...

Engineering Failure Analysis, 2021
Abstract Disc cutters are used to cut the rocks in variable load conditions which results in cutter wear and failure. The wear of the cutter plays a vital role in the overall time cycle, efficiency and economics of tunneling projects. It changes the shape of the cutter, influences the cutting efficiency and has a detrimental effect on the annual cost

TBM Disc Cutter Model Based on Admissible Energy Principles
Transactions of Tianjin University, 2017Disc cutters are the most critical tool for excavation by tunnel boring machine (TBM). Based on the energy conservation law, finite-element modeling, and elastic–plastic continuum theory for tunneling by TBM, the interaction between disc cutters and rock mass was examined.

Multi-edge disc cutters wear and damage evaluation
2023The term "cutter wear" refers to a reduction in radial length. The fragmentation of rocks by disc cutters per revolution might result in the intermittently repeated wear of a given place on the cutter tip. Thus, the wear capacity of disc cutters can be determined by measuring the wear of a point on the cutter tip when crushing rocks, known as the ...
