Potential impact of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy on the formation of young O-rich stars [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications
The Milky Way underwent significant transformations in its early history, characterised by violent mergers and satellite galaxy accretion. However, recent observations reveal notable star formation events over the past 4 Gyr, likely triggered by ...

A cosmic-ray loaded nascent outflow driven by a massive star cluster [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications
Cosmic rays are widely held to drive outflows from star-forming galaxies and profoundly influence galaxy evolution. Direct evidence for cosmic-ray carrying outflows is however lacking.

Bars in dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxy discs [PDF]

open access: bronzeMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2018
We study the shape and kinematics of simulated dwarf galaxy discs in the APOSTLE suite of $ $CDM cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We find that a large fraction of these gas-rich, star-forming discs show weak bars in their stellar component, despite being dark matter-dominated systems.

Exploring the millimetre emission in nearby galaxies: Analysis of the edge-on galaxy NGC 891 [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2022
New observations of the edge-on galaxy NGC 891, at 1.15 and 2mm obtained with the IRAM 30-m telescope and the NIKA2 camera, within the framework of the IMEGIN (Interpreting the Millimetre Emission of Galaxies with IRAM and NIKA2) Large Program, are ...

Formation of Transitional cE/UCD Galaxies through Massive/Dwarf Disc Galaxy Mergers

open access: yesGalaxies, 2023
The dynamics of the merger of a dwarf disc galaxy with a massive spiral galaxy of the Milky Way type were studied in detail. The remnant of such interaction after numerous crossings of the satellite through the disc of the main galaxy was a compact ...

Dark matter mass loss in galaxy flybys: dependence on impact parameter [PDF]

open access: yesSerbian Astronomical Journal, 2022
Galaxy flybys, interactions where two independent halos inter-penetrate but detach at a later time and do not merge, occur frequently at lower redshifts.

Our Galaxy’s youngest disc

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2022
ABSTRACT We investigate the structure of our Galaxy’s young stellar disc by fitting the distribution functions (DFs) of a new family to 5D Gaia data for a sample of $47\, 000$ OB stars. Tests of the fitting procedure show that the young disc’s DF would be strongly constrained by Gaia data if the distribution of Galactic dust were ...

Internally driven warps in disc galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2021
ABSTRACT Any perturbation to a disc galaxy that creates a misalignment between the planes of the inner and outer disc, will excite a slowly evolving bending wave in the outer disc. The torque from the stiff inner disc drives a retrograde, leading spiral bending wave that grows in amplitude as it propagates outwards over a period of ...
