Tropical Doctor, 2002An audit of surgical patients who requested discharge against medical advice over a 5 year period (July 1996–July 2001) at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital showed that 78 patients (66 males and 12 females) were involved. The age range was 3 days to 85 years (mean 37.86 years). The 21–40 age group was the most involved.

Emergency department discharges against medical advice
The Journal of Emergency Medicine, 1992A retrospective chart review was performed on 52 consecutive discharges against medical advice (AMA) from an emergency department. The study's objective was to assess documentation of the medical record as well as the patients' perceptions of their experience. Sixty-seven percent of the charts reflected the competence of the patient.

Archives of General Psychiatry, 1977The clinical histories of patients discharged against medical advice from a general hospital were studied to discern important diagnostic correlates of this event. Drug addiction occurred in 22% of the 73 test subjects and in none of 175 random controls.
