Discoid meniscus is the most common congenital variant of the meniscus. Its variability in pathology leads to a spectrum of clinical presentations in patients. Treatment must be tailored to the specific pathology of the discoid meniscus. Imaging studies such as radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging can be useful in confirming the diagnosis, but ...

Abstract A discoid medial meniscus is an extremely rare anomaly. We present 4 cases of symptomatic discoid medial meniscus. Furthermore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the unaffected knee was obtained in 3 cases, and 1 patient had bilateral discoid medial menisci as well as a unilateral discoid lateral meniscus proven by MRI ...

Three cases of discoid medical menisci were diagnosed preoperatively by arthrography. Discoid mensiscus usually occurs on the lateral side of the knee; its pathogenesis is obscure.

Discoid meniscus is uncommon and usually affects the lateral meniscus. We present 16 patients (8 male and 6 female) with tears of a discoid lateral meniscus occurring in 1800 arthroscopies. We carried out an arthroscopic partial meniscectomy leaving an intact peripheral rim. This is biomechanically satisfactory and the early results are encouraging.

Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine, 2023
Discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is a well-known meniscus variant, and comprises excess and thickened meniscal tissue, altered collagen ultrastructure, and peripheral instability. This article presents a comprehensive review on current knowledge of DLM, focusing on pathology in parallel with surgical techniques and outcomes.A paradigm shift in surgical ...

AbstractPartial and total meniscectomies are the most common treatments for patients with discoid lateral meniscus (DLM). We conducted this study to quantitatively assess and compare the outcomes of partial and total meniscectomies for DLM. We also assessed whether the outcomes differed by the type of DLM, duration of follow-up, and age of patients. We

The discoid meniscus is probably a congenital deviation that usually occurs laterally. The Watanabe classification consists of complete, incomplete, or Wrisburg ligament types. Complete and incomplete discoid menisci normally require treatment only when a tear occurs. The Wrisburg ligament type lacks a posterior capsular attachment.

Update on imaging of the discoid meniscus
Skeletal Radiology, 2021Discoid menisci represent a range of morphological meniscal variants, most commonly involving the lateral meniscus. Clinical presentation ranges from an asymptomatic incidental finding to snapping, pain, swelling and reduced range of knee movement. Symptomatic presentation of discoid menisci is usually due to meniscal tears and instability resulting ...

Symptomatic Discoid Medial Meniscus
Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, 2013The patient was a 27-year-old man with a chief complaint of right medial knee pain for the past 4 months. Despite physical therapist intervention for a month, the patient's right knee pain continued to progressively worsen, and the patient was subsequently referred to an orthopaedic surgeon.
