A discrete-event simulation (DES) is characterized by discrete changes in the sim-ulation’s state as the simulation evolves over time. Examples of systems that might be evaluated using DES include: queueing systems, such as a bank service counter, where customers arrive occasionally and may wait in lines for service; manufacturing systems, where parts ...

Discrete event simulation to build simulators for teaching
Journal of Simulation, 2014Recent studies propose the use of discrete event simulation models as a tool to help teaching. That is suggested mainly due to the current development of software and its visual animation resources. Therefore, this paper presents simulation models to assist teaching in high school classes.

Asynchronous parallel discrete event simulation
IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics - Part A: Systems and Humans, 1996Complex models may have model components distributed over a network and generally require significant execution times. The field of parallel and distributed simulation has grown over the past fifteen years to accommodate the need of simulating the complex models using a distributed versus sequential method. In particular, asynchronous parallel discrete

Discrete-event simulation on hypercube architectures
[1988] IEEE International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD-89) Digest of Technical Papers, 2003A performance model for a hierarchical discrete-event-simulation algorithm running on a hypercube architecture is presented. A static allocation of system components to hypercube processors and a global clock algorithm with an event-based time increment are assumed. The model is applied to a digital systems simulation.

It appears to be the rule rather than the exception that usefully detailed stochastic models are sufficiently complex so that it is extremely difficult or impossible to obtain an exact analytic solution. Simulation is essentially a controlled statistical sampling technique that can be used to study complex stochastic systems when analytic techniques do

Discrete event simulation in the NEURON environment
Neurocomputing, 2004Abstract The response of many types of integrate and fire cells to synaptic input can be computed analytically and their threshold crossing either computed analytically or approximated to high accuracy via Newton approximation. The NEURON simulation environment simulates networks of such artificial spiking neurons using discrete event simulation ...

A Component Model for Discrete Event Simulation
2002The paper describes the ideas behind a technique for hierarchical linking of simulations as a way of building large-scale simulations from components that interact with each other via communication ports. The resulting component simulation view is compared with the presently used simulation world views.
