A diffusive plant-sulphide model: spatio-temporal dynamics contrast between discrete and distributed delay

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Applied Mathematics
This paper studies the spatio-temporal dynamics of a diffusive plant-sulphide model with toxicity delay. More specifically, the effects of discrete delay and distributed delay on the dynamics are explored, respectively.

From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Data-driven discovery of delay differential equations with discrete delays

open access: yesJournal of Computational and Applied Mathematics
The Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy) framework is a robust method for identifying governing equations, successfully applied to ordinary, partial, and stochastic differential equations. In this work we extend SINDy to identify delay differential equations by using an augmented library that includes delayed samples and Bayesian ...

Stability implications of delay distribution for first-order and second-order systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In application areas, such as biology, physics and engineering, delays arise naturally because of the time it takes for the system to react to internal or external events.

Unique circulating miRNAome signatures captured with distinct molecular states in Lynch syndrome and sporadic colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Circulating microRNA profiles distinguish nonmalignant Lynch syndrome from cancer‐associated Lynch syndrome, sporadic colorectal cancer, and healthy controls. Age‐stratified analysis reveals disease‐specific regulatory states, and a six‐miRNA panel shows concordant separation in an independent colorectal tissue cohort.

Comparing the Effect of Semi‐Immersive Virtual Reality, Computerized Cognitive Training, and Traditional Rehabilitation on Cognitive Function in Multiple Sclerosis: A Randomized Clinical Trial

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Cognitive impairment is a common non‐motor symptom in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), negatively affecting autonomy and Quality of Life (QoL). Innovative rehabilitation strategies, such as semi‐immersive virtual reality (VR) and computerized cognitive training (CCT), may offer advantages over traditional cognitive rehabilitation (TCR ...

Stability and bifurcation analysis of a gene expression model with small RNAs and mixed delays

open access: yesAdvances in Difference Equations, 2019
This paper investigates a gene expression model, which is mediated by sRNAs (small RNAs) and includes discrete and distributed delays. We take both the strong and weak kernel forms of distributed delay into consideration.

Technique to derive discrete population models with delayed growth

open access: yesJournal of Biological Dynamics, 2023
We provide a procedure for deriving discrete population models for the size of the adult population at the beginning of each breeding cycle and assume only adult individuals reproduce. This derivation technique includes delay to account for the number of

Delay-Variation-Dependent Stability of Delayed Discrete-Time Systems

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 2016
This note is concerned with the stability analysis of linear discrete-time system with a time-varying delay. A generalized free-weighting-matrix (GFWM) approach is proposed to estimate summation terms in the forward difference of Lyapunov functional, and theoretical study shows that the GFWM approach encompasses several frequently used estimation ...
