Development of a Discrete Mass Inflow Boundary Condition for MFIX [PDF]
MFIX (Multiphase Flow with Interphase eXchanges) is an open source software package developed by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) used for modeling the chemical reactions, heat transfer, and hydrodynamics of fluid-solid systems. Currently,

FEMxDEM multi-scale modelling with second gradient regularization [PDF]
The multi-scale FEMxDEM approach is an innovative numerical method for geotechnical problems, using at the same time the Finite Element Method (FEM) at the engineering macro-scale and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) at the scale of the microstructure

It is shown that laser ablation pretreatment under oxygen‐free conditions enables copper–aluminium bonding at significantly lower deformation degrees and improved properties compared to mechanical brushing. Laser ablation further increases interface contact area and induces favourable residual stress states and microstructural compatibility ...

Pelletizing analysis of cylinder pelletizer on MgO-fluxed pellets by discrete element method (DEM)
Discrete Element Method (DEM) was used to analyze palletization process of MgO-fluxed pellets in cylinder pelletizer. The effects of the charge ratio and rotational speed of the cylinder pelletizer on the behavior of MgO-fluxed pellets were investigated ...

Numerical investigation on the role of discrete element method in combined LBM–IBM–DEM modeling
Particle collisions play a very important role in determining the fluid-particle multiphase flow, and thus it is crucial to treat the particle-particle interaction using a felicitous method in numerical simulations. A novel combined lattice Boltzmann method (LBM)-immersed boundary method (IBM)-discrete element method (DEM) scheme is presented in this ...

Low‐cycle fatigue damage in Mn–Mo–Ni reactor pressure vessel steel is examined using a combined electron backscatter diffraction and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy approach. The study correlates texture evolution, dislocation substructure development, and vacancy‐type defect formation across uniform, necked, and fracture regions, providing

Stabilization of L‐PBF Ni50.7Ti49.3 under low‐cycle loading was investigated. Recoverable strain after cycling was dependent on the amount of applied load. Recovery ratio was 53.4% and 35.1% at intermediate and high load, respectively. The maximum total strain reached 10.3% at a high load of 1200 MPa.

A Hadoop use case for engineering data
This paper presents the VELaSSCo project (Visualization for Extremely LArge-Scale Scientific Computing). It aims to develop a platform to manipulate scientific data used by FEM (Finite Element Method) and DEM (Discrete Element Method) simulations.

High‐frequency (HF) welding of steel is limited by oxide inclusions that degrade weld quality. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the integration of a nonthermal Ar/H2 dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma jet into HF welding. Local plasma treatment provides effective shielding and in‐situ oxide reduction, resulting in markedly fewer and ...
