Granular element method for three‐dimensional discrete element calculations
International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, 2013SUMMARYThis paper endows the recently‐proposed granular element method (GEM) with the ability to perform 3D discrete element calculations. By using non‐uniform rational B‐Splines to accurately represent complex grain geometries, we proposed an alternative approach to clustering‐based and polyhedra‐based discrete element methods whereby the need for ...

An algebraic multigrid method for finite element discretizations with edge elements
Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications, 2002AbstractThis paper presents an algebraic multigrid method for the efficient solution of the linear system arising from a finite element discretization of variational problems in H0(curl,Ω). The finite element spaces are generated by Nédélec's edge elements.A coarsening technique is presented, which allows the construction of suitable coarse finite ...

Some Recent Applications of the Discrete Element Method
Civil-Comp Proceedings, 1991Abstract The discrete element method is a powerful numerical technique for the stress analysis of certain classes of structure. It does not possess the generality of the finite element method but neither does it require massive computing power. It seems applicable to line structures where Saint Venant's principle is relevant and it produces second ...

Simulation of food mastication based on discrete element method
International Journal of Computer Applications in Technology, 2008The information on mastication and food sensory properties is usually collected by recording people' ingesting and chewing actions using electromyography, fluorography, cinephotography, videofluorography, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging, and so on.

Discrete Element Method for Slope Stability Analysis
Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1992Limit equilibrium methods for slope stability analysis do not, in general, satisfy the overall equilibrium conditions; they must make assumptions regarding the inclination and location of the interslice forces. An alternative slope analysis based on the discrete element method is presented to avoid these drawbacks.

AbstractFlow behavior of particles is simulated by means of discrete element method (DEM) in a screw conveyor. The gas flow is considered by the Euler model. The subgrid scale model turbulence model is applied to solve gas turbulence. A detailed description of the model equations applied has been presented.
