In this chapter, the classic DEVS formalism from Zeigler et al. will be introduced. It will be discussed in depth, which properties of the DEVS MoC impedes its exploitation for a hardware / software co-design flow. Thus, the SynDEVS MoC will be introduced which thoroughly refines the DEVS MoC to allow synthesis of SynDEVS models.
