Complex Economic Behavior Patterns Are Constructed from Finite, Genetically Controlled Modules of Behavior

open access: yesCell Reports, 2019
Summary: Complex ethological behaviors could be constructed from finite modules that are reproducible functional units of behavior. Here, we test this idea for foraging and develop methods to dissect rich behavior patterns in mice.

THE DISCRETE FUNDAMENTAL GROUP OF THE ASSOCIAHEDRON, AND THE EXCHANGE MODULE [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Algebra and Computation, 2013
The associahedron is an object that has been well studied and has numerous applications, particularly in the theory of operads, the study of non-crossing partitions, lattice theory and more recently in the study of cluster algebras. We approach the associahedron from the point of view of discrete homotopy theory.

Motion Control with Fuzzy Logic in an High Speed PLC System [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 2008
The paper presents a new strategy of makingsoftware modules with fuzzy control. It is the best solutionfor implementing complex applications. Dynamic controltoday takes place in discrete time and discrete values.Concurrently, it is desirable that the ...

Physiological modules for generating discrete and rhythmic movements: Component analysis of EMG signals.

open access: yesFrontiers in Computational Neuroscience, 2015
A central question in Neuroscience is that of how the nervous system generates the spatiotemporal commands needed to realize complex gestures, such as handwriting.

Golgi enzymes are retrieved from the plasma membrane to the trans‐Golgi network

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Golgi enzymes are traditionally considered resident proteins retained within the Golgi apparatus. Here, we demonstrate that a subset transiently reaches the cell surface and is subsequently retrieved to the trans‐Golgi network via retrograde transport. Using a nanobody‐based toolkit, we uncover a dynamic trafficking cycle of several Golgi enzymes.

Generalized lifting modules

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences, 2006
We introduce the concepts of lifting modules and (quasi-)discrete modules relative to a given left module. We also introduce the notion of SSRS-modules. It is shown that (1) if M is an amply supplemented module and 0→N′→N→N″→0 an exact sequence, then M

Ligand‐dependent transcriptional heterogeneity in cell cycle gene expression delays G1/S entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
EGF and HRG induce distinct G1/S progression programs in ErbB2‐amplified BT474 breast cancer cells. Despite activating the potent ErbB2–ErbB3 heterodimer, HRG does not accelerate cell‐cycle entry. Instead, EGF promotes earlier restriction‐point passage via ERK–FOS signaling, whereas HRG activates the AKT–MYC axis, driving transcriptional heterogeneity ...

Analysis and comparison of the stability of discrete-time and continuous-time linear systems

open access: yesArchives of Control Sciences, 2016
The asymptotic stability of discrete-time and continuous-time linear systems described by the equations xi+1 = Ākxi and x(t) = Akx(t) for k being integers and rational numbers is addressed. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability

Functional comparison of EncB and EncC cargo proteins in iron storage within the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

Arc regulates a second-guessing cognitive bias during naturalistic foraging through effects on discrete behavior modules

open access: yesiScience, 2023
Summary: Foraging in animals relies on innate decision-making heuristics that can result in suboptimal cognitive biases in some contexts. The mechanisms underlying these biases are not well understood, but likely involve strong genetic effects.
