Dry intrusions and warm‐core development in Medicanes: Insights from a multi‐case analysis and the peculiar evolution of Ianos

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Mediterranean tropical‐like cyclones show a clear seasonality, with September cyclones exhibiting the deepest convection and Ianos representing the most extreme case. While one or more dry intrusions are typically detected during the cyclone life cycle, Ianos instead features two much weaker descending airflows.

A new scale‐selective measure of curvature for meteorological fields

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We introduce a novel diagnostic called curvature using radial variation (CURV) that quantifies the local cyclonic or anticyclonic curvature of mean‐sea‐level pressure or geopotential height gridded fields over selected scales. A depiction of how CURV values relate to differing cyclonic curvature is shown in the figure.

Multi‐scale flow analysis for scale‐aware urban canopy models

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We found that scale‐aware models are necessary when numerical weather prediction models approach hectometric resolution, which is associated with a characteristic length‐scale of morphological heterogeneity. This morphology‐dependent length‐scale indicates that resolved and unresolved heterogeneity are equally important.

Large Eddy Simulation with Energy-Conserving Schemes and the Smagorinsky Model: A Note on Accuracy and Computational Efficiency

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
Despite advances in turbulence modelling, the Smagorinsky model remains a popular choice for large eddy simulation (LES) due to its simplicity and ease of use.

Feedback Linearisation with State Constraints

open access: yesInternational Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Feedback Linearisation (FBL) is a widely used technique that applies feedback laws to transform input‐affine nonlinear control systems into linear control systems, allowing for the use of linear controller design methods such as pole placement.

Discretisation Errors in Landau Gauge on the Lattice [PDF]

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Physics, 1999
Lattice discretisation errors in the Landau gauge condition are examined. An improved gauge fixing algorithm in which &Ogr; (a2) errors are removed is presented. &Ogr; (a2) improvement of the gauge fixing condition improves comparison with the continuum Landau gauge in two ways: (1) through the elimination of &Ogr; (a2) errors and (2 ...

Transparency, Sustainable Governance and Digital Accessibility in Municipalities: A Machine Learning Approach

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires transparent and accountable local governments, yet little is known about the structural drivers of municipal transparency. This study introduces a machine learning approach to predict municipal transparency using the Bidimensional Transparency Index (BTI), which measures both the ...

Discretisation of Data in a Binary Neural k-Nearest Neighbour Algorithm [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper evaluates several methods of discretisation (binning) within a k-Nearest Neighbour predictor. Our k-NN is constructed using binary neural networks which require continuous-valued data to be discretised to allow it to be mapped to the binary ...

Opportunities for Australia Amid China's Carbon‐Neutral Transition: Input–Output Approach With Analysis of Australian Renewable Potential

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A major transformation in China's energy mix is underway as the country pursues carbon neutrality by 2060, posing significant structural challenges for Australia as a major exporter of carbon‐intensive resources. This study examines the economic impacts of China's decarbonisation on Australia by applying static and dynamic input–output (IO ...
