Evaluating the construct validity of text embeddings with application to survey questions

open access: yesEPJ Data Science, 2022
Text embedding models from Natural Language Processing can map text data (e.g. words, sentences, documents) to meaningful numerical representations (a.k.a. text embeddings).

The Validity, Reliability, Measurement Error, and Minimum Detectable Change of the 30‐Second Fast‐Paced Walk Test in Persons with Knee Osteoarthritis: A Novel Test of Short‐Distance Walking Ability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Objective To develop and establish the reliability, validity, measurement error, and minimum detectable change of a novel 30‐second fast‐paced walk test (30SFW) in persons with knee osteoarthritis (OA) that is easy to administer and can quantify walking ...

Predicting and Comparing the Subjective Health Experience of Older Cancer Survivors and Non‐Cancer Survivors: A Modeling Approach

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This study underscores the significant influence of frailty and vitality on the subjective health experience of older cancer survivors with acceptance and control emerging as salient mediators. These findings affirm the conceptual and empirical robustness of the model highlighting its potential utility in shaping future interventions for older cancer ...

Psychometric properties of the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale (SAQOL-39) in a generic stroke population [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background: We previously developed the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life scale (SAQOL-39) and tested it with people with chronic aphasia. A scale allowing comparisons of quality of life between people with versus without aphasia post-stroke would be of

From Bug to Feature: Harnessing Cross‐Sensitivity for Multiparametric Luminescence Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cross‐sensitivity in luminescence sensing is reframed from a limitation into a resource for multiparametric detection. Using ruby microspheres as a model system, cross‐sensitivity is quantitatively assessed and exploited through linear discriminant analysis, enabling simultaneous, correction‐free pressure and temperature sensing with a single ...

Indole‐3‐Propionic Acid Improves Alveolar Development Impairment via Targeting VAMP8‐mediated SNAREs Complex Formation in Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study aims to evaluate the impact of the tryptophan‐derived metabolite indole‐3‐propionic acid (IPA) on lung development and autophagic flux. IPA alleviates hyperoxia‐induced alveolar arrest by promoting autophagosome‐lysosome fusion via inhibition of VAMP8 phosphorylation, which is suggestive of a promising therapeutic target of BPD.
