The measurement problem in level discrimination

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2007
There is disagreement among theorists over the exact measure to be used to quantify auditory level discrimination. It has been proposed that, for level discrimination tasks, the measure that is most linearly related to the sensitivity index, d′, will be the correct measure.

An uncertainty measure in logistic discrimination

Statistics in Medicine, 1988
AbstractThe effect of sampling variation on individual decisions and error rates in logistic discriminant analysis is discussed. The concept of the β‐confidence allocation rule is introduced, which allows testing of whether observations are (in)correctly assigned at a given significance level.

Measuring Employment Discrimination Through Controlled Experiments

The Review of Black Political Economy, 1994
Race/ethnic discrimination in hiring can be measured under controlled conditions using matched pairs of minority and nonminority research assistants posing as applicants for the same job. In 149 in-person job applications in the Washington, D.C., labor market, African American applicants were treated less favorably than equally qualified nonminorities

Racial Discrimination Measurement and Analysis

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2021
Racial discrimination takes place when people are disproportionately treated or denied the same opportunities as those in a similar position because of their nationality, birthplace, racial origin, or color of their skin. For instance, an employer declined to recruit a properly qualified Aboriginal person as a shop assistant to a less qualified person ...

Measuring and Defining Discrimination

2015
Given the prevalence and myriad consequences associated with actual and perceived workplace discrimination, research addressing this topic has grown rapidly in recent years. This expansion of the literature has been accompanied by a proliferation of constructs, definitions, and measures.

MEASUREMENT OF CATHECTIC DISCRIMINATION

Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, 1961
Ramfalk, C. W. Measurement of cathectic discrimination. Scand. J. Psychol., 1961, 2, 191–202—‐(1) One of the hypothetical constructs of a personality theory is preliminarily explored. The constructs are based on an experimental model in which the main concepts can be operationally defined and objectively measured by cathectic discrimination technique. (

Hierarchical Model for Rank Discrimination Measures

2013
In this paper we focus on rank discrimination measures, i.e., functions able to quantify the discrimination power of an attribute w.r.t. the class, taking into account the monotonicity of the class w.r.t. the attribute. These measures are used in decision tree induction in order to enforce a local form of monotonicity of the class w.r.t.

The Measurement of Discriminability

Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1955
Abstract The need for a quantitative measure of “Discriminability” is pointed out. A formula is required which will enable one, knowing the physical measurements of a set of sensory signals, to predict the time taken by a human observer to recognize any one. Existing formulae relate to the two-choice threshold task and to very “easy” multi-choice ones.

Discriminant analysis and similarity measure

Pattern Recognition, 2014
The cosine similarity measure is often applied after discriminant analysis in pattern recognition. This paper first analyzes why the cosine similarity is preferred by establishing the connection between the cosine similarity based decision rule in the discriminant analysis framework and the Bayes decision rule for minimum error.
