Twin studies in rheumatic diseases
Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism, 1994Twin studies attract both clinicians and geneticists because of the value of the twin method in helping unravel the genetic predisposition to diseases and the role of environment in their causation. In the field of rheumatology, there are many case reports on twins concordant or discordant for diseases.

Congenital Heart Disease in Twins
New England Journal of Medicine, 1967THE familial nature of congenital heart disease has become increasingly apparent.1 2 3 However, a major obstacle to the acceptance of a significant genetic role in the etiology of congenital heart defects has been the failure to demonstrate that when 1 member of a set of identical twins is affected with a congenital heart lesion, the co-twin is also ...

Smoking and Parkinson’s disease in twins
Neurology, 2002To test the hypothesis that cigarette smoking protects against the development of PD.Smoking has been inversely associated with PD in many studies, but whether this reflects a biologic effect on the underlying disease process or merely confounding or selection bias remains uncertain. The authors compared smoking histories in male twin pairs identified ...

Hyaline Membrane Disease in Twins
Pediatrics, 1968In analyzing the evidence for the role of prematurity and the significance of added stress in the pathogenesis of hyaline membrane disease, it seems pertinent to examine the occurrence of the disease in twins. Were prematurity alone the determinant of the likelihood of developing the disease, one would expect the disease to occur in both twins.

Ophthalmologica, 1977
After a survey of cases in the literature reported, two cases of Crouzon disease, in monovular twins are described. The observation in twins and the opportunity of histologic examination of optic nerve, permitted some considerations in order to help in understanding this syndrome.

Dupuytren’s Disease in Identical Twins
Journal of Hand Surgery, 1993The aetiology of Dupuytren’s disease remains unknown, although hereditary and environmental influences have been implicated. Previous reports have suggested that identical twins will develop identical contractures. This paper reports two pairs of identical twins, in each of which only one twin has evidence of Dupuytren’s disease.
