Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate induces epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and cancer stem cell-like properties via Wnt/β-catenin signaling in human bronchial epithelial cells

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
Inhalation exposure to polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate (PHMG-p), a primary component of humidifier disinfectants, has been linked to interstitial lung disease and potential carcinogenic effects.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Comprehensive analysis of adverse outcome pathway, potency, human exposure supports carcinogenicity of polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate in lung cancer

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
In this study, we investigated the potential mechanisms by which polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate (PHMG-p), a known respiratory irritant, may contribute to lung cancer development.

Assessment of antibiotic- and disinfectant-resistant bacteria in hospital wastewater, south Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study

open access: yesJournal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2015
Introduction: Large quantities of antimicrobials are used in hospitals for patient care and disinfection. Antibiotics are partially metabolized and residual quantities reach hospital wastewater, exposing bacteria to a wide range of biocides that could ...

Hijacking emergency granulopoiesis: Neutrophil ontogeny and reprogramming in cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Neutrophils are highly plastic innate immune cells; their functions in cancer extend beyond the tumour microenvironment. This Review summarises current understanding of neutrophil maturation and heterogeneity and highlights tumour‐induced granulopoiesis as a systemic programme that expands immature, immunosuppressive neutrophils via tumour‐derived ...
