The limits of consciousness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Consciousness is essential for one’s normal functioning, including targeted interactions with the surrounding world and with other human beings. At present, many theories and definitions of consciousness coexist, the focus of which can be on the ...

Research on Disability Weights of Wasting Thirst Disorder Based on ICD-11 Traditional Medicine Chapter [PDF]

open access: yesZhongguo quanke yixue
Background The approval of the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11) has for the first time included a chapter about traditional medicines that includes TCM. Disease weight (DW) is a weight coefficient that quantifies the health

Chronic disorders of consciousness

open access: yesExperimental and Therapeutic Medicine, 2017
Over the last 20 years, studies have provided greater insight into disorders of consciousness (DOC), also known as altered state of consciousness. Increased brain residual functions have been identified in patients with DOC due to the successful application of novel next-generation imaging technologies. Many unconscious patients have now been confirmed

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Discriminative power of diverse nonlinear EEG dynamics across consciousness states during auditory stimulation in disorders of consciousness

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience
ObjectiveThis study addressed the challenge of assessing consciousness in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) using nonlinear dynamic parameters applied to electroencephalogram (EEG) characteristics stimulated by music.MethodEEG signals from ...

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

EEG oscillatory changes following rehabilitative tactile and thermal stimulation in disorders of consciousness: a longitudinal and pilot study

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience
IntroductionRecent advances in the understanding of sensory processing in disorders of consciousness (DoC) have highlighted the potential of exteroceptive stimuli, particularly tactile stimulation. Unlike auditory or visual inputs, tactile stimuli engage

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.
