Selective interactions between short-distance pollen and seed dispersal in self-compatible species. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
In plants, genes may disperse through both pollen and seeds. Here we provide a first theoretical study of the mechanisms and consequences of the joint evolution of pollen and seed dispersal.

Estimating dispersal from short distance spatial autocorrelation [PDF]

open access: yesHeredity, 2005
A series of theoretical studies has formed a strong connection between spatial statistics observed in populations and summary measures of the amount of dispersal. Synthesized, these developments allow dispersal to be indirectly estimated from standing spatial patterns of genetic variation under a range of conditions broad enough to be likely met in ...

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Evolution of dispersal and life history strategies – Tetrahymena ciliates

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2007
Background Considerable attention has focused on how selection on dispersal and other core life-history strategies (reproductive effort, survival ability, colonization capacity) may lead to so-called dispersal syndromes.

Dispersal of Midges (Chironomidae, Diptera) on Terrestrial Area after the Emergence from Saline Lake Shira [PDF]

open access: yesЖурнал Сибирского федерального университета: Серия Биология, 2019
We studied the number of midges (Chironomidae, Diptera) on the terrestrial area where flows of organic matter and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) provided by the emergence of the amphibiotic insects from saline steppe Lake Shira were ...

Nonsignificant isolation by distance implies limited dispersal [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, 2012
Understanding the scale of dispersal is an important consideration in the conservation and management of many species. However, in species in which the high‐dispersal stage is characterized by tiny gametes or offspring, it may be difficult to estimate dispersal directly.

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

Evaluation of the Potential of Laser Shock Peening Compared with Cold Expansion for Improving Fatigue Resistance of Riveted Lap Joints of Aerospace Grade 7175 Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser shock peening for enhancing fatigue performance of riveted aerospace aluminum joints. A comparative approach with cold expansion combines fatigue testing and synchrotron X‐ray methods. Integrating mechanical testing with residual stress and strain characterization provides insights into how different treatments affect the ...

Spatial heterogeneities of human-mediated dispersal vectors accelerate the range expansion of invaders with source–destination-mediated dispersal

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2020
Rapid range expansions of invasive species are a major threat to ecosystems. Understanding how invasive species increase their habitat ranges and how environmental factors, including intensity of human activities, influence dispersal processes is an ...

Pelagic Larval Duration and Dispersal Distance Revisited [PDF]

open access: yesThe Biological Bulletin, 2009
I present dispersal distances for 44 species with data on propagule duration (PD) for 40 of these. Data were combined with those in Shanks et al. (2003; Ecol. Appl. 13: S159-S169), providing information on 67 species. PD and dispersal distance are correlated, but with many exceptions. The distribution of dispersal distances was bimodal.
