Epauletted fruit bats prefer native plants and contribute to seed dispersal in a South African agricultural landscape

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 2, Page 399-410, June 2023., 2023
Abstract Fruit bats provide vital ecosystem services through seed dispersal aiding secondary forest regeneration. However, fruit bat species are often persecuted by fruit‐growing farmers due to perceived and actual crop damage. In this study, we investigated the dietary components of Epomophorous wahlbergi, Epomophorous crypturus and Rousettus ...

Connectivity among thermal habitats buffers the effects of warm climate on life‐history traits and population dynamics

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 91, Issue 11, Page 2301-2313, November 2022., 2022
Through its effects on movement, landscape fragmentation may influence the response of populations to climate change. This 3‐year‐long experiment on common lizards demonstrates that habitat connectivity can drastically change the impacts of warming on life‐history traits and population dynamics.

Chimpanzees as ecosystem service providers: Seed dispersal of an economically important plant resource

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 54, Issue 3, Page 656-669, May 2022., 2022
Western chimpanzees effectively disperse the seeds of Saba senegalensis, an important uncultivated commodity and food resource for people in Senegal. They promote germination success of ditto seeds through a beneficial gut treatment of seeds and by dispersing seeds disproportionately to habitats that are conducive to seed germination.

Meadowfoam seed oil as a natural dispersing agent for colorants in lipstick

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cosmetic Science, Volume 43, Issue 4, Page 484-493, August 2021., 2021
In this study, a green and sustainable oil, meadowfoam seed oil was evaluated as a pigment dispersing agent and compared to castor oil and octyldodecanol in dispersions and lipsticks. Overall, meadowfoam seed oil’s performance was qualitatively and quantitatively similar to castor oil and octyldodecanol indicating that meadowfoam seed oil is a viable ...
