River Sand and Gravel Mining: Global Drivers, Impacts, and Pathways for Sustainable Management

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 3, September 2026.
Abstract River sand and gravel are mined worldwide at volumes that now rival their natural replenishment, yet quantitative knowledge of this mining activity and its consequences lags far behind many other global environmental pressures. We synthesize 411 peer‐reviewed studies published since 1974 within a new Driver‐to‐Management Pathway for ...

Fluid Toxicities: Violent Affective Ecologies in Cartagena, Colombia

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 58, Issue 5, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Water is at the centre of climate change emergency concerns in coastal cities. It constitutes here a fluid entry point to investigating the socio‐ecological politics of toxicities for residents dwelling with and against contaminated waters in Cartagena, Colombia's urban extensions.

Gravity Wave Energy Baselines (∼30–110 km) Established From Lidar Observations at McMurdo (77.84°S, 166.67°E), Antarctica: Energy Dissipation and Constituent Diffusion

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract Lidar observations above McMurdo, Antarctica from 2011 to 2024 are used to characterize gravity wave (GWs) potential energies (Ep ${E}_{p}$) in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). Alongside characterizations in the middle atmosphere (30–70 km), the GW baselines show dissipation at all altitudes from 30 to 110 km.

Solvent‐Guided Chiral Assemblies and Chemical Doping of OEG‐Functionalized Conjugated Polymers

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 38, Issue 45, 13 August 2026.
Solvent‐dependent aggregation pathways dictate whether conjugated polymers form chiral lyotropic liquid‐crystalline assemblies or achiral packed aggregates. Mapping solvent‐controlled β₁ and β2 states reveals that weaker backbone association favors β₁ aggregates and reorganizable twisted mesophases, whereas stronger backbone association favors β2 ...

Altered Nasal Microbiota in Sinonasal Tumors: A Comparative Analysis of Malignant and Benign Sinonasal Tumors

open access: yesInternational Forum of Allergy &Rhinology, Volume 16, Issue 8, Page 778-787, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Although shifts in nasal microbiota have been well‐documented in inflammatory upper airway conditions, microbiota tumor‐associated alterations remain uncharacterized. This study is the first to compare sinonasal microbiota profiles of patients with malignant tumors (MT), benign tumors (BT), and controls, offering insights into tumor‐

Getting by With a Little Help From Fungal Friends: Seed‐Associated Endophytes Contribute to Seed Defense Against Fungal Pathogens in Keystone Tropical Trees

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
This study explored microbially mediated seed defense in fig (Ficus) species through inoculation experiments. We show that priority effects from endophytic fungi contribute to increased seed survival in the presence of fungal pathogens. ABSTRACT Soil‐borne fungal pathogens are known to be major causes of seed mortality in tropical forests; however, not
