Air-core photonic band-gap fibers: the impact of surface modes

open access: yes, 2004
We study the dispersion and leakage properties for the recently reported low-loss photonic band-gap fiber by Smith et al. [Nature 424, 657 (2003)]. We find that surface modes have a significant impact on both the dispersion and leakage properties of the ...

Network topology drives population temporal variability in experimental habitat networks

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
Habitat patches connected by dispersal pathways form habitat networks. We explored how network topology affects population outcomes in laboratory experiments using a model species (Daphnia carinata). Central habitat nodes in complex lattice networks exhibited lower temporal variability in population sizes, suggesting they support more stable ...

Geographic variation in walking activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examined whether there is geographic variation in field populations, focusing on the moving activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Results showed significant differences in moving activity among field populations but no correlation with latitude or meteorological factors.

Chiral Anomalous Dispersion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The linearized Einstein equation describing graviton propagation through a chiral medium appears to be helicity dependent. We analyze features of the corresponding spectrum in a collision-less regime above a flat background. In the long wave-length limit,

occumb: An R package for site occupancy modeling of eDNA metabarcoding data

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study introduces a new R package, occumb, for the convenient application of site occupancy modeling using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding data. We outline a data analysis workflow, including data setup, model fitting, model assessment, and comparison of potential study settings based on model predictions, all of which can be performed using

Direct evidence of nuclear spin waves in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ by high-resolution neutron-spin-echo spectroscopy

open access: yes, 2013
We investigated the dispersion of nuclear spin waves in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ by using neutron spin-echo spectroscopy at millikelvin temperatures. Our results show unambiguously the existence of dispersion of nuclear spin waves in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$ at T = 30 mK.

Exhaled air dispersion during high-flow nasal cannula therapy versus CPAP via different masks

open access: yesEuropean Respiratory Journal, 2019
Background High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is an emerging therapy for respiratory failure but the extent of exhaled air dispersion during treatment is unknown.

Between Droughts and Floods: The Seasonal Response of Freshwater Snails in Artificial Reservoirs in the Brazilian Semiarid Region

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We investigate the seasonal dynamics of two freshwater snails, Biomphalaria straminea and Melanoides tuberculata, in artificial reservoirs of the Brazilian semiarid region. Despite regulated hydrology, B. straminea exhibited strong seasonal fluctuations associated with dry periods, while M. tuberculata maintained stable populations throughout the year,

A Wideband Dielectric Waveguide-Based 160-GHz Radar Target Generator

open access: yesSensors, 2019
The increasing number of radar sensors in commercial and industrial products leads to a growing demand for system functionality tests. Conventional test procedures require expensive anechoic chambers to provide a defined test environment for radar ...
