Experimental Plate Wave Dispersion Analysis

open access: yes, 1991
In an effort to verify theoretical models which relate matrix cracking to strength reduction, acoustic emission (AE) was used to locate matrix cracking in flat graphite/epoxy cross-ply tensile coupons. Using independent test methods [1] it was discovered that errors of up to 2 inches were common in the AE data (specimen length — 8 inches).

PARK(ing) time–How park deficiency affects the biological clock in a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Drosophila park mutants serve as a model for Parkinson's disease. We used this strain to investigate the connection between oxidative stress and the circadian clock mechanism. We showed that increased oxidative stress affects the physiology of pacemaker cells, disrupting their daily structural plasticity. Lack of rhythmic signaling from pacemaker cells

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Wavelength tunable 10-GHz 3-ps pulse source using a dispersion decreasing fiber-based nonlinear optical loop mirror [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We experimentally demonstrate the use of a dispersion decreasing fiber (DDF)-based nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) for the generation of wavelength tunable soliton-like pulses at a repetition rate of 10 GHz.

Investigation of the relationship between the structural and material composition and band gap characteristics of periodic metal composite beams

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu
Vibration reduction strategies based on wave propagation phenomena, such as generating band gaps in periodic structures, are attracting attention in the field of mechanical engineering. This paper investigates how the structural and material compositions

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Who Searches for Low Prices? Population Characteristics and Price Dispersion in the Market for Prescription Drugs [PDF]

open access: yes
We examine the relationship between population characteristics and price dispersion for 75 prescription drugs in five markets. Based on models of price dispersion, we consider that search costs are likely lower for the elderly, who are repeat purchasers.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an
