Dissipated Energy during Cyclic Deformation

Measurements of the dissipated energy of polycrystalline Zn samples were performed at room temperature during cyclic deformation at 19 kHz. The samples used (λ/2-samples) were excited to oscillate in the longitudinal resonant mode. It proved possible to estimate the distribution of σ and e along the λ/2-sample, which cannot be measured directly.

Heat evolution in isolated brown fat cells has been measured by microcalorimetry. Thermogenesis (= oxygen consumption) is enhanced in the presence of CO2. This effect is probably due to pyruvate carboxylase activity which will increase the mitochondrial concentration of oxaloacetate.
