How fertility and union stability interact in shaping new family patterns in Italy and Spain [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper we investigate the interrelationships between fertility decisions and union dissolution in Italy and Spain. We argue that there might exist a spurious relationship between these two life trajectories.

Porous silicon formation and electropolishing

open access: yes, 2001
Electrochemical etching of silicon in hydrofluoride containing electrolytes leads to pore formation for low and to electropolishing for high applied current. The transition between pore formation and polishing is accompanied by a change of the valence of

EBSD Study of Creep‐Induced Lattice Misorientation in MgO‐Particle‐Reinforced Austenitic Steel Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Creep experiments at 900°C on coarse‐grained steel‐ceramic composites containing recycled magnesia reveal that higher ceramic volume fractions significantly enhance the creep resistance. Detailed EBSD investigations identify subgrain formation in the steel matrix as the dominant deformation mechanism.

Laser Metal Powder Deposition of Titanium Microalloyed HSLA Steel FeC0.12Si0.25Mn1.3

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the additive manufacturing of titanium‐doped high‐strength low‐alloy (HSLA) steel via laser metal deposition. It reveals distinct process‐structure relationships for elemental powder blends compared to prealloyed feedstocks.

Reflux Dissolution of Thorium Dioxide in Nitric Acid

open access: yesHe huaxue yu fangshe huaxue
This study aims to investigate the reflux dissolution process of thorium dioxide in nitric acid, seeking an alternative to the current fluoride ion-dependent dissolution methods to prevent corrosion of stainless steel dissolvers and subsequent processing

Grain scale investigation of olivine dissolution: Uncertainty in dissolution rate calculation

open access: yesGoldschmidt2025 abstracts
Olivine ((Mg, Fe)2SiO4) is one of Earth’s most abundant minerals and has received significant attention as a potential feedstock for enhanced silicate weathering (ESW), a technique for reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). The dissolution rate of olivine is typically estimated by analyzing water chemistry or tracking changes in grain size ...

Electrical Conductivities of Conductors, Semiconductors, and Their Mixtures at Elevated Temperatures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents a comprehensive review of temperature‐dependent electrical conductivity data for multiple material classes at elevated temperatures, highlighting a persistent conductivity gap between metals and semiconductors in the range of 102$\left(10\right)^{2}$– 107$\left(10\right)^{7}$ S/m. Metal–ceramic irregular metamaterials are proposed

An empirical model linking solution volume-to-surface area ratio to the dissolution kinetics of oxides in aqueous systems

open access: yesFrontiers in Nuclear Engineering
Understanding how environmental variables influence the dissolution rate of nuclear waste materials in aqueous systems is crucial for developing durable nuclear waste forms.

Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated
