Modeling the Dynamics and Export of Dissolved Organic Matter in the Northeastern U.S. Continental Shelf [PDF]

open access: yes
Continental shelves are believed to play a major role in carbon cycling due to their high productivity. Particulate organic carbon (POC) burial has been included in models as a carbon sink, but we show here that seasonally produced dissolved organic ...

From Waste to Value: Conversion of Calcium Sulfate to Vaterite via Carbon Capture and Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a new concept for carbon management that relies on the carbonation of industrial gypsum waste and yields phase‐pure vaterite at ambient conditions without any additives. The obtained vaterite is further shown to be a reactive material that develops compressive strength in aqueous suspensions like conventional cements.

Elemental and isotopic composition of river water during a flood event in agricultural watershed: insight of sources and pathways of water and terrestrial derived matter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Flood event in agricultural watershed represents 64% of water discharge but up to 71% of dissolved organic carbon and 94 of total suspended matter export.

Synthetic Nanobiology Actuated Lipometabolic Cell Factory for Autologous Tumor Immunotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
FA plays a crucial role in the interaction between tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment, especially for the immune response. A biocatalytic immunoenhancement strategy is developed to boost antitumor immunity by FA metabolic orientation to ceramide. Through the design of this delicate catalytic immunoenhancement strategy, the synthetic nanobiology

Impact of Surface Functionalization on NV Quantum Properties: Implications for Biosensing with Fluorescent Nanodiamonds

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Fluorescent nanodiamonds (fNDs) have emerged as an invaluable quantum sensing platform for biological and biochemical systems. This paper investigates the influence of common surface functionalization strategies for bioconjugation on the quantum properties of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamonds.

Mechanisms of the Effects of Carbon Source Addition on Carbon Transport and Sequestration in Purple Soil Sloping Farmland under Natural Rainfall

open access: yesShuitu Baochi Xuebao
[Objective] Degradation of purple soil and water loss is serious, and it is difficult to increase and sequester carbon in the soil. The aim of the study was to explore the impact of carbon source addition on carbon sequestration of purple soil sloping ...

Introducing Pure Calcium Orthophosphate Gels and Aerogels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis of calcium phosphate‐based gels and aerogels is reported, which exhibit highly porous structures built up of networks of nanoparticles. In case of amorphous aerogels, this leads to yet unmatched specific BET surface areas, making these materials especially interesting for biomedical applications.

In field N transfer, build-up, and leaching in ryegrass-clover mixtures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Two field experiments investigating dynamics in grass-clover mixtures were conducted, using 15N- and 14C-labelling to trace carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) from grass (Lolium perenne L.) and clover (Trifolium repens L. and Trifolium pratense L.).

Structure–Transport–Ion Retention Coupling for Enhanced Nonvolatile Artificial Synapses

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nitrogen incorporation into the conjugated backbone of donor–acceptor polymers enables efficient charge transfer and deep ion embedding in organic electrochemical synaptic transistors (OESTs). This molecular‐level design enhances non‐volatile synaptic properties, providing a new strategy for developing high‐performance and reliable neuromorphic devices.

Using the Photostationary State of Arylazopyrazoles to Control Phase Transitions of Liquid Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A series of new arylazopyrazole photoswitches is designed as dopants for liquid crystalline materials. Unprecedented, the distribution of photoisomers at the photostationary state upon irradiation with light of specific wavelengths (365, 460, 520 nm) is used to control the liquid crystalline phase transitions under isothermal conditions, including ...
