A Dynamical Systems Approach to Spectral Music: Modeling the Role of Roughness and Inharmonicity in Perception of Musical Tension

open access: yesFrontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, 2020
Tension-resolution patterns seem to play a dominant role in shaping our emotional experience of music. In traditional Western music, these patterns are mainly expressed through harmony and melody.

To help others or not: A moderated mediation model of emotional dissonance

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2022
This article proposes a moderated mediation model of emotional dissonance. In the model, emotional leadership negatively affects emotional dissonance, which, in turn, negatively affects helping behavior.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

INSTABILITY AND DISSONANCE: PROVOCATIONS FROM SANDRA HARDING

open access: yesZygon, 1995
. Sandra Harding's work is useful, not only as a critique of the scientific method and its epistemological constructs, but also in providing new energy and insights to the discussions about epistemology between theology and science.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

BLAZING A NEW TRAIL FOR SCIENCE‐AND‐RELIGION

open access: yesZygon, 2010
Science‐and‐religion must be cognizant of the future on several fronts. A challenge that remains central to our endeavor is the issue of diversity—not topical diversity, but participant diversity.

Colinguisme et dissonances. Les enjeux du travail des langues

open access: yesLa Bretagne Linguistique, 1996
The awareness of an identity voice, of which badumes are a part, is an awareness of writing: we know that the human species enters history with writing. The awareness of a collective identity is achieved through the inscription of standards.

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.

‘On this near side of a cut’: Fault Lines as ‘principle of song’ in Denise Riley’s Grief-Writing

open access: yesÉtudes Britanniques Contemporaines, 2023
After losing her son Jacob to a previously-undiagnosed heart condition, English poet and philosopher Denise Riley published a collection of poems entitled Say Something Back, among which features the famous piece ‘A Part Song’, in 2016.
