The effect of prey abundance and fisheries on the survival, reproduction, and social structure of killer whales (Orcinus orca) at subantarctic Marion Island

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 6, June 2023., 2023
We tested whether the survival of killer whales (Orcinus orca) observed at Marion Island correlated with social structure and prey variables using multistate models of capture recapture data spanning 12 years. Survival was most strongly correlated with indices of social structure where higher sociality was associated with increased survival probability.

Seabird interactions with longlining operations for Dissostichus eleginoides at the South Sandwich Islands and South Georgia [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
During seven days of operations involving the setting and hauling of longlines to catch the toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides around the South Sandwich Islands, actual and potential interactions with seabirds were assessed.

Guiding marine protected area network design with comparative phylogeography and population genomics: An exemplary case from the Southern Ocean

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 28, Issue 9, Page 1891-1907, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Aim Networks of connected marine protected areas (MPAn) are recognized as the key area‐based management tool to preserve biodiversity, moderate exploitation of marine resources and increase ecological resilience to climate change. Although population genetic studies could greatly benefit connectivity assessments between MPAs, genetic data are ...

Fisheries bycatch mitigation measures as an efficient tool for the conservation of seabird populations

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 7, Page 1674-1685, July 2022., 2022
We provide a holistic approach to assess the effects of management measures by analysing datasets from sampling methods commonly employed in seabird studies. Our conclusions should encourage the eradication of invasive predatory species in seabird breeding areas and the strengthening of bycatch mitigation measures for the vulnerable seabird species ...

Update of the Reference case assessment of the toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) resource in the Prince Edward Islands vicinity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
The Reference case assessment of the Prince Edward Islands (PEI) toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) resource reported by Brandão and Butterworth (2019) is updated to take the further data now available for 2019 and 2020 into account. The differences in

Contrasting life‐history strategies of three sympatric icefish species in the northern Scotia Sea

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Comprehending a species' life‐history strategies is crucial to inform effective conservation efforts. Commercial fishing impacts icefish (family: Channichthyidae) in the Scotia Sea, but detailed information on species‐specific life histories remains largely unknown.

Distribution and ecology of the four Macrourus species by‐caught in the longline fishery at South Georgia, Southern Ocean

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Although Macrourus species are the main by‐catch across Southern Ocean longline fisheries, including around South Georgia, the lack of species‐specific data has hindered effective management and ecological understanding. Aggregation of macrourids at genus level masks critical interspecific differences in life‐history strategies and ...
