Short-Term Complications of Distal Humerus Fractures in Elderly Patients

open access: yes, 2016
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate 30-day postoperative complications of open reduction and internal fixation [ORIF] and total elbow arthroplasty [TEA] for the treatment of distal humerus fractures in elderly patients using a validated

From Model to Practice: Testing Near‐Infrared Spectroscopy as a Bone Collagen Prescreening Tool

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Collagen is a vital archaeological material, preserving biochemical signatures that provide insights into past environments, diets, and human–animal interactions. However, diagenetic processes can lead to rapid and often inconspicuous degradation of collagen. Given the variability in collagen preservation and its significance for analyses such

Evaluation of functional outcome using dual plating in treatment of intra-articular distal humerus fractures in adults

open access: yesJournal of the Pakistan Medical Association
Of all the humerus fractures in adults, 30% are of the distal end of the bone. The dual plate is strong biomechanically. The current study was conducted at Al-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital, Baghdad, Iraq, between July 1, 2019 to July 1, 2021 to study the ...

Funny Bones: Ecomorphology of the Bovid Distal Humerus and its Paleontological Implications

open access: yes, 2022
When seeking to understand early human evolution, it is fundamental to understand the ecology of the environment in which those early humans lived. This is an important overlap between the fields of anthropology and palaeontology, and here I take an ...

Functional Morphology of the Thoracic Limb in the Silky Anteater (Cyclopes didactylus): A Comparative Study With Tamandua tetradactyla

open access: yesActa Zoologica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The order Xenarthra presents unique morphophysiological adaptations related to its specialized ecological niches. This study investigates the functional morphology and comparative myology of the thoracic limb in Cyclopes didactylus (silky anteater) and Tamandua tetradactyla (southern tamandua) to elucidate how muscle arrangements support ...

Allometric patterns in Rhamphorhynchus muensteri and their role in the paleoecology, life habits, and taxonomic framework of pterosaurs

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The Graphical Abstract ilustrates the different allometric pattern within different Pterosauria groups, highlighting how the allometry influences the flight and habits of Pterosauria. Abstract Pterosaurs were the first vertebrates to achieve powered flight, a result of various unique anatomical adaptations, and significant morphological diversity ...

Updating the forelimb anatomy of the domestic cat (Felis catus, Felidae) based on evolutionary inferences of its muscles and nerves I: Shoulder and brachium

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
In this study, we provide a detailed description of the shoulder and brachium muscles and the brachial plexus of the domestic cat (Felis catus). We identified muscular variants (articularis humeri, coracobrachialis longus, biceps brachii caput breve), clarified the independence of the anconeus medialis muscle from the triceps brachii muscle, and ...

Morphological study of the supratrochlear foramen in Canis lupus ssp.

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The supratrochlear foramen (STF) is a common anatomical feature in the humeri of dogs and wolves. This study shows that the STF exhibits a consistent shape and position in dogs and wolves, suggesting a common morphological pattern; however, it was less frequent in smaller dog humeri, and its size correlated with humeral dimensions, suggesting that ...

Functional compartmentalization of the anconeus: A three‐dimensional study of muscle morphology and innervation patterns

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
In this anatomic study of anconeus utilizing dissection, digitization and 3D modeling, anconeus was found to have three distinct parts: proximal, distal, and deep. Each part had unique morphology, architecture and innervation, indicating different roles in forearm pronation, elbow extension, and joint stabilization.
