The distal radius includes the metaphysis, formed mainly of cancellous bone, supporting the articular surface (Figure 1). This articular surface is biconcave, allowing articulation with the proximal carpal row (the radio-carpal joint) and has a sigmoid notch for articulation with the distal ulna (the distal radio-ulnar joint (DRUJ)).

Fractures of the Distal Radius and Scaphoid
Journal of Hand Surgery, 1996Simultaneous fractures of the distal radius and scaphoid is an uncommon wrist injury. During the period 1980 to 1993, 23 patients with a median age of 39 years were treated for this injury. The median follow-up period was 7 years. All scaphoid fractures were undisplaced and located in the waist or distal third.

Distal radius nonunion is either more common or more commonly recognized. The success of operative treatment to gain union seems to have improved along with improvements in operative fixation of fractures of the distal radius. Operative treatment to gain union or arthrodese the wrist can improve function and comfort with relatively few complications.

For years, distal radius fractures have been approached with the remark that “They all do well.” In many cases, this is true, even with significant displacement. But selecting patients who fit into this group can be difficult. The options and rationale for treatment of intra-articular and extra-articular distal radius fracture are discussed.

[A Distal Radius Fracture Is Not Simply a Distal Radius Fracture].
Praxis, 2022A Distal Radius Fracture Is Not Simply a Distal Radius Fracture Abstract. We report on a 57-year-old female patient with a distal extra-articular radius fracture. The family doctor's suspicion was an osteoporosis-associated fracture, and an interdisciplinary investigation was initiated.

Nonunion of Distal Radius Fractures
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 2004Nonunion of a distal radius fracture is extremely uncommon. Healing problems in the distal radius seem to be related to unstable situations, such as concomitant fracture of the distal radius and ulna, and to an inadequate period of immobilization. Nonunion should be suspected if there is continuing pain after remobilization of the wrist in combination ...

Fractures of the distal forearm have an incidence of 37 out of 10,000 females and 9 out of 100,000 males and are among the most frequent fractures of the adult population above the age of 35 years. In younger adults below the age of 39 years, high-energy trauma is more frequent, leading to a higher percentage of additional carpal ligamentous injuries ...

Distal Radius Fractures in the Athlete
Clinics in Sports Medicine, 2020Although the technical details of distal radius fracture fixation in athletes are largely similar to the general population, the issues surrounding the injury, desire to return to sport, and rehabilitation require specialized attention. Athletes are generally healthy, with a drive to recover and must balance the risk of long-term consequences of ...

Open fractures of the distal radius
The Journal of Hand Surgery, 2002A review of 18 patients treated at our institution for open distal radius fractures was performed. The patients were followed up for an average of 32 months (range, 12 months to 5.3 years). Wounds were classified according to Gustilo and Anderson with 9 type I (50%), 3 type II (17%), and 6 type III (34%) (3 IIIa, 2 IIIb, 1 IIIc) injuries.

The treatment of fractures of the distal radius is in a state of flux, because the results of conservative treatment have so far been unsatisfactory in 20%-30% of cases. Instability resulting from dorsal compression, damaged ligaments (60%) and the presence of débris in the area of the metaphysis means that, while reduction is easy, retention is ...
