Open fractures of the distal radius

The Journal of Hand Surgery, 2002
A review of 18 patients treated at our institution for open distal radius fractures was performed. The patients were followed up for an average of 32 months (range, 12 months to 5.3 years). Wounds were classified according to Gustilo and Anderson with 9 type I (50%), 3 type II (17%), and 6 type III (34%) (3 IIIa, 2 IIIb, 1 IIIc) injuries.

Smoking Increases Postoperative Complications After Distal Radius Fracture Fixation: A Review of 417 Patients From a Level 1 Trauma Center

HAND, 2018
Background: Unstable distal radius fractures that undergo surgical stabilization have varying complication rates in the literature. Smoking is known to affect bone healing and implant fixation rates but has never been definitively shown to affect ...

Distal Radius Fractures in the Elderly

Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2017
Distal radius fractures are common in elderly patients, and the incidence continues to increase as the population ages. The goal of treatment is to provide a painless extremity with good function. In surgical decision making, special attention should be given to the patient’s bone quality and functional activity level.

Nonunion of Distal Radius Fractures

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 2004
Nonunion of a distal radius fracture is extremely uncommon. Healing problems in the distal radius seem to be related to unstable situations, such as concomitant fracture of the distal radius and ulna, and to an inadequate period of immobilization. Nonunion should be suspected if there is continuing pain after remobilization of the wrist in combination ...

Distal Radius Fractures

Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 2012
To discuss the evidence base behind treatment of pediatric distal radius fractures. We identified randomized controlled trials addressing the treatment of children with torus fractures, minimally displaced fractures, and displaced fractures of the distal radius.Torus fractures and minimally displaced fracture is treated by removable splints instead of ...

Complex Distal Radius Fractures

Orthopedic Clinics of North America, 2013
Complex distal radius fractures are high-energy injuries of the wrist with articular disruption, ligamentous instability, significant comminution, soft tissue injury, and/or neurovascular impairment. The management of these injuries requires a thorough understanding of wrist functional anatomy and familiarity with a wide selection of approach and ...

ACUTE FRACTURES OF THE DISTAL RADIUS

Hand Clinics, 2000
Distal radius fractures commonly are sustained by athletes during competition. Typically, these are high energy injuries with severe displacement, metaphyseal comminution, and articular surface disruption. Each fracture is distinguished by its degree of articular displacement, stability, and reducibility.

Distal Radius Fractures

2014
The treatment of fractures of the distal radius is in a state of flux, because the results of conservative treatment have so far been unsatisfactory in 20%-30% of cases. Instability resulting from dorsal compression, damaged ligaments (60%) and the presence of débris in the area of the metaphysis means that, while reduction is easy, retention is ...

Distal Radius Fractures

2017
For years, distal radius fractures have been approached with the remark that “They all do well.” In many cases, this is true, even with significant displacement. But selecting patients who fit into this group can be difficult. The options and rationale for treatment of intra-articular and extra-articular distal radius fracture are discussed.
