Complex Distal Radius Fractures
Orthopedic Clinics of North America, 2013Complex distal radius fractures are high-energy injuries of the wrist with articular disruption, ligamentous instability, significant comminution, soft tissue injury, and/or neurovascular impairment. The management of these injuries requires a thorough understanding of wrist functional anatomy and familiarity with a wide selection of approach and ...

Comminuted Distal Radius Fractures
Orthopedic Clinics of North America, 1992Comminuted displaced fractures of the distal end of the radius pose a significant treatment challenge. The goal of treatment is to restore functional, painless motion of the wrist and fingers. Although satisfactory results correlate to a large extent with obtaining and maintaining normal anatomy, excessive distraction and a flexed wrist position with ...

Intraarticular Distal Radius Fracture
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 2001A twenty-eight-year-old mason fell from a ladder sustaining an intraarticular distal radius fracture to his dominant right wrist. He is neurologically intact and has moderate swelling.

For years, distal radius fractures have been approached with the remark that “They all do well.” In many cases, this is true, even with significant displacement. But selecting patients who fit into this group can be difficult. The options and rationale for treatment of intra-articular and extra-articular distal radius fracture are discussed.

Fractures of the distal forearm have an incidence of 37 out of 10,000 females and 9 out of 100,000 males and are among the most frequent fractures of the adult population above the age of 35 years. In younger adults below the age of 39 years, high-energy trauma is more frequent, leading to a higher percentage of additional carpal ligamentous injuries ...

WS is a 55-year-old right-handed man who presents to the emergency department via self-transport complaining of severe wrist pain after a fall directly onto his outstretched right hand. He denies any loss of consciousness. On primary survey, he has a GCS of 15, a patent airway and is hemodynamically stable.

Various common injuries in the wrist and hand are investigated in this chapter. Significant attention is paid not only to proper diagnostic examination and imaging, but also to optimal nonoperative and operative treatment options to manage these conditions.

Distal radius fractures constitute a significant part of daily orthopedic practice. One in six fractures presenting at an emergency department represents a distal radius fracture (Court-Brown and Caesar 2006). While many of these fractures can be treated safely and effectively with nonsurgical methods, intra-articular distal radius fractures can be a ...

Fractures of the distal end of the radius are the most common fractures in humans. The variants of type of fracture and associated injuries are numerous, depending on the mechanism of injury, the amount of energy absorbed and the quality of the bone. Treatment concepts evolve as our understanding of the physiopathology of this heterogeneous group of ...
