Planetary nebulae in the elliptical galaxy NGC 821: kinematics and distance determination
Using a slitless spectroscopy method with the 8.2 m Subaru telescope and its FOCAS Cassegrain spectrograph, we have increased the number of planetary nebula (PN) detections and PN velocity measurements in the flattened elliptical galaxy NGC 821.

In this research, ZrC coatings are evaluated against various counterprobes at the microscale using novel super‐stiff atomic force microscopy cantilevers. The chemical composition of the coating is shown to be an important factor influencing coating hardness and Young's modulus, while surface roughness, counterprobe hardness, and surface energy are the ...

Additive Manufacturing of Highly Alloyed Aluminum–Lithium
Al–Li alloys, promising for future lightweight constructions due to their low density and high stiffness, are limited to 9 at% lithium in commercial forms because of segregation issues. To overcome this traditional limitation, powder bed fusion with an ultrashort pulse laser is used.

The Araucaria Project. Near-Infrared Photometry of Cepheid Variables in the Sculptor Galaxy NGC 55
We have obtained deep images in the near-infrared J and K filters of four fields in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 55 with the ESO VLT and ISAAC camera. For 40 long-period Cepheid variables in these fields which were recently discovered by Pietrzy{\

Inverse Estimation Method of Material Randomness Using Observation
This study proposes a method for inversely estimating the spatial distribution characteristic of a material’s elastic modulus using the measured value of the observation data and the distance between the measurement points.

Multilayering of TiN film with metallic Ti film is adopted to enhance the fracture resistance of TiN thin films. Plastic dissipation within Ti with process zone size of ≈250 nm, along with elastic–plastic mismatch driven changes to crack driving force enhances the crack growth resistance by ten times, enabling physics informed design of optimized ...

Ni‐base superalloys produced using additive manufacturing (AM) have a different response to heat treatments when compared to their conventional counterparts. Due to such unpredictability, various alloys with industrial interest are currently overlooked in most prior AM research.

Carath\'eodory's Theorem and moduli of local connectivity [PDF]
We give a constructive proof of the Carath\'eodory Theorem by means of the concept of a modulus of local connectivity and the extremal distance of the separating curves of an ...
