Synthetic Population of Binary Cepheids. II. The Effect of Companion Light on the Extragalactic Distance Scale

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Because of their period–luminosity relation (PLR), classical Cepheids play a key role in the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale and the determination of the Hubble–Lemaître constant H _0 .

Astrometry with Hubble Space Telescope: A Parallax of the Fundamental Distance Calibrator RR Lyrae [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We present an absolute parallax and relative proper motion for the fundamental distance scale calibrator, RR Lyr. We obtain these with astrometric data from FGS 3, a white-light interferometer on HST. We find $\pi_{abs} = 3.82 \pm 0.2$ mas.

In situ characterization of high-temperature mechanical behaviors of freestanding Si, BSAS and Yb2SiO5 environmental barrier coatings by three-point bending tests based on digital image correlation

open access: yesResults in Surfaces and Interfaces, 2023
The high-temperature mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of Si, BSAS and Yb2SiO5 ceramic materials are important for environmental barrier coatings.

Revisiting the refined Distance Conjecture

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2023
The Distance Conjecture of Ooguri and Vafa holds that any infinite-distance limit in the moduli space of a quantum gravity theory must be accompanied by a tower of exponentially light particles, which places tight constraints on the low-energy effective ...

Broad modulus range nanomechanical mapping by magnetic-drive soft probes

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Stiffness matching between the probe and deformed portion of the sample in piezo-drive peak force modulation atomic force microscopy (AFM) limits the modulus measurement range of single probes.

THE YOUNG AND BRIGHT TYPE IA SUPERNOVA ASASSN-14lp: DISCOVERY, EARLY-TIME OBSERVATIONS, FIRST-LIGHT TIME, DISTANCE TO NGC 4666, AND PROGENITOR CONSTRAINTS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
On 2014 December 9.61, the All-sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN or “Assassin”) discovered ASASSN-14lp just ∼2 days after first light using a global array of 14 cm diameter telescopes.

Utilization of waste dolomite dust in carbon fiber reinforced vinylester composites

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2022
The present study was designed to explore the applicability of dolomite dust (a waste from a dolomite quarry) as filler in polymer composites. Therefore, fixed carbon fiber reinforced vinyl ester composites with varying dolomite dust proportions (0, 5 ...

Cluster AgeS Experiment (CASE): RR Lyrae stars from the globular cluster Omega Centauri as standard candles

open access: yes, 2003
New photometry of RRab and RRc stars in Omega Cen is used to calibrate their absolute magnitudes M_V as a function of: a) metallicity; and b) the Fourier parameters of light curves in the V band. The zero point of both calibrations relies on the distance

Inverse Estimation Method of Material Randomness Using Observation

open access: yesCrystals, 2020
This study proposes a method for inversely estimating the spatial distribution characteristic of a material’s elastic modulus using the measured value of the observation data and the distance between the measurement points.
