Nanorheology of living cells measured by AFM-based force-distance curves.

open access: yesNanoscale, 2020
Mechanobiology aims to establish functional relationships between the mechanical state of a living a cell and its physiology. The acquisition of force-distance curves with an AFM is by far the dominant method to characterize the nanomechanical properties

Consistent distances from Baade-Wesselink analyses of Cepheids and RR Lyraes [PDF]

open access: yesMon.Not.Roy.Astron.Soc. 342 (2003) L58, 2003
By using the same algorithm in the Baade-Wesselink analyses of Galactic RR Lyrae and Cepheid variables, it is shown that, within 0.03 mag (1 sigma) statistical error, they yield the same distance modulus for the Large Magellanic Cloud. By fixing the zero point of the color-temperature calibration to those of the current infrared flux methods and using ...

First cosmology results using Type Ia supernova from the Dark Energy Survey: simulations to correct supernova distance biases [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2018
We describe catalogue-level simulations of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) light curves in the Dark Energy Survey Supernova Program (DES-SN) and in low-redshift samples from the Center for Astrophysics (CfA) and the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP).

Swampland variations on a theme by KKLT

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2019
The KKLT scenario in a warped throat, if consistent, provides a concrete counterexample to both the AdS scale separation and the dS swampland conjectures.

The Tip of the Red Giant Branch Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
We present the I-band luminosity function of the red giant branch stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using the data from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey (Zaritsky, Harris & Thompson, 1997). Selecting stars in uncrowded, low-extinction regions, a discontinuity in the luminosity function is observed at I_0 = 14.54 mag.

The Cepheid distance to the Local Group Galaxy NGC 6822 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Recent estimates of the Cepheid distance modulus of NGC 6822 differ by 0.18 mag. To investigate this we present new multi-epoch JHKs photometry of classical Cepheids in the central region of NGC 6822 and show that there is a zero-point difference from earlier work.

Change in skeletal muscle stiffness after running competition is dependent on both running distance and recovery time: a pilot study [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2018
Long-distance running competitions impose a large amount of mechanical loading and strain leading to muscle edema and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Damage to various muscle fibers, metabolic impairments and fatigue have been linked to explain how

The Araucaria Project. The distance to the Small Magellanic Cloud from late-type eclipsing binaries [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We present a distance determination to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on an analysis of four detached, long period, late type eclipsing binaries discovered by the OGLE Survey. The components of the binaries show negligible intrinsic variability.

The distance to the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 [PDF]

open access: yesAstron.Astrophys. 413 (2004) 903-912, 2003
The distance to NGC 5128, the central galaxy of the Centaurus group and the nearest giant elliptical to us, has been determined using two independent distance indicators: the Mira period-luminosity (PL) relation and the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch (RGB).

51 Tauri and the Hyades distance modulus

open access: yes, 1988
