Stellar tracers of the Cygnus Arm. II: A young open cluster in Cam OB3

open access: yes, 2008
Cam OB3 is the only defined OB association believed to belong to the Outer Galactic Arm or Cygnus Arm. Very few members have been observed and the distance modulus to the association is not well known.

Numerical Studies of Influencing Factors on the Homogeneity of the Powder Mixture during the Powder Spreading Process of Powder Bed Fusion–Laser Beam/Metal

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
AISI 304L stainless steel powder is mixed with silicon nitride (Si3N4) powder and processed by PBF‐LB/M, allowing partial retention of Si3N4. The numerical approach effectively predicts the Si3N4 powder homogeneity and N content distribution on the powder bed. Recent studies have focused on the alloying of nitrogen (N) in high‐alloy stainless steels by

The Hubble Space Telescope Extragalactic Distance Scale Key Project. X. The Cepheid Distance to NGC 7331

open access: yes, 1998
The distance to NGC 7331 has been derived from Cepheid variables observed with HST/WFPC2, as part of the Extragalactic Distance Scale Key Project. Multi-epoch exposures in F555W (V) and F814W (I), with photometry derived independently from DoPHOT and ...

Pulsational M_V versus [Fe/H] relation(s) for globular cluster RR Lyrae variables [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We use the results from recent computations of updated non-linear convective pulsating models to constrain the distance modulus of Galactic globular clusters through the observed periods of first overtone RRc pulsators. The resulting relation between the

Soft‐Layered Composites with Wrinkling‐Activated Multi‐Linear Elastic Behavior, Stress Mitigation, and Enhanced Strain Energy Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, exciting new bi‐/multi‐linear elastic behavior of soft elastic composites that accompany the activation of wrinkling in the embedded interfacial layers is analyzed. The new features and performance of these composite materials, including dramatic enhancements in energy storage, can be tailored by the concentration of interfacial layers ...

Red Giants in the Halo of the S0 Galaxy NGC 3115: A Distance and a Bimodal Metallicity Distribution [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
Using the Hubble Space Telescope, we resolve the red giant branch in the halo of the S0 galaxy NGC 3115. We measure magnitudes and $(V-I)$ colours for stars down to 1.5 magnitudes below the tip of the red giant branch.

Performance Improvement of Raman Distributed Temperature System by Using Noise Suppression

open access: yesPhotonic Sensors, 2017
In Raman distributed temperature system, the key factor for performance improvement is noise suppression, which seriously affects the sensing distance and temperature accuracy. Therefore, we propose and experimentally demonstrate dynamic noise difference

Development of Ternary Magnesium Alloys for Laser Powder Bed Fusion: Optimizing Oxide Layer Thickness

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing of magnesium alloys by laser is difficult because the melting point of the oxide layer is much higher than the evaporation temperature of the metal underneath. Making the oxide layer thinner can solve this problem. Alloying magnesium with strontium makes the oxide layer thinner, especially at 0.5 wt%.
